Job Summary:
The Coordinator is responsible for providing services to Franklin Pierce students throughout our campuses and programs who qualify for academic, residential, and dietary accommodations, as well as acting as a consultant to faculty, staff, and administrators. In this capacity, the coordinator provides strategic direction for the delivery of accommodations to all FPU students.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Evaluates, facilitates and assists students with access to accommodations, study strategies, and self-advocacy training.
- Work closely with others in Academic and Student Affairs staff to develop and support appropriate technology and programs which meet the needs of students requiring services.
- Maintain current information regarding state and federal laws and regulations as well as the best practices of other universities and private employers concerning the rights of persons with learning disabilities and ways of providing reasonable accommodations to students with learning disabilities while maintaining program performance standards.
- Maintain membership and active involvement in state, regional, and national organizations related to the activities of the position.
- Actively participate with faculty, administration, staff, students, and parents to develop and enhance the academic experience for students with learning disabilities.
- Maintain appropriate records to evaluate the progress of students utilizing services and the success of those services as provided to them
- Develop, maintain and ensure written materials and other information for dissemination to the University community and appropriate external constituents are readily available
- Develop and implement internal measures and/or reports which inform the university administration of the status of ADA compliance and opportunities for students with learning disabilities.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with 5 years working in a similar capacity at a university/college or high school level required.
- Master's degree with 3 years working in a similar capacity at a university/college or high school level preferred.
- Experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting and working to implement academic accommodations; higher education setting strongly preferred.
- Exemplary customer skills, including dealing effectively with the students, faculty, staff, and general public both in person and over the telephone.
- Maintain professionalism when dealing with all staff and other customers.
- Demonstrates understanding and sensitivity to the needs of all prospective as well as current students.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent writing skills and the demonstrated ability to develop written reports and action plans.
- Ability to work effectively, decisively and flexibly in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Ability to identify problems and to propose feasible solutions. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (specifically, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook) and the self- motivation and the ability to stay current with emerging office technologies.
- Demonstrated experience working with students with learning disabilities, Asperger's, and attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder
- Knowledge of and experience in implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as applicable to post-secondary education.
- Knowledge of and experience working with assistive technology as appropriate to college students.
- Proven record of success working with college students, parents and faculty. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituents.
- Sensitivity to maintaining proper balance between student and organizational needs and awareness of relevant privacy policies.
- Outstanding organizational skills and ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
- Keep supervisor updated regularly on programming, student contacts and initiatives.
- Carry out all responsibilities and objectives in a professional manner.
- Maintain professionalism when dealing with all faculty, staff and students.
- Accept and render constructive criticism in a professional manner.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures established by Franklin Pierce University.
