About the team
For this Corrective Reading Teacher (Long-term Substitute) position, you'll be working for -our middle school in center city Philadelphia called Freire Charter Middle School (5th-8th Grade): Freire Schools' youngest Dragons are preparing for college and changing what it means to be in middle school. Our students arrive at Freire Middle School at a range of achievement levels. Here, they don't just catch up – they make leaps in personal and academic growth, setting them up for even greater success in high school. In 2022, following a longitudinal study on student outcomes commissioned by the Philadelphia School Partnership, Freire Middle School has been identified as one of 36 Philadelphia public and public charter (K-8) schools "Beating the Odds" in academic growth.
*This long-term assignment will begin in October and end mid-March. This position has strong potential for a permanent position at the middle school (content/position TBD) based on work performance and fit.
What you'll do
Responsibilities
- Teach 4 sections of a direct instruction reading intervention grounded in the science of reading. These interventions are aimed at our students who have word-level gaps in their foundational reading skills.
- Closely monitor student progress and reteach particular skills as necessary.
- Cultivate the belief that literacy is a tool for liberation and empowerment, and that students are capable of become stronger readers!
- Cover 1 lunch duty

Minimum requirements
- Valid certification in any of the following areas: Special Education, English Language Arts, Reading Specialist, Elementary or Middle Grades General Certification.
- Ability to form strong relationships with students and motivate them to push past struggle.
- A belief that literacy is an equity issue, and an understanding that their role will be to close the gaps that our students have in their foundational reading skills.
- A desire to help all of our students become grade-level readers
Pay and benefits
The annual salary range for this role is $50,000 - $80,000. We offer a competitive salary based on your experience and qualifications. Our benefits package includes health, dental, vision, and more. Pennsylvania employees are enrolled in Freire's 403(b) retirement plan which includes a 5% contribution from Freire.
