THE IMPACT YOU CAN HAVE:
As Counsel II, Commercial, Technology and Data, you will partner with the VP Assistant General Counsel, General Counsel and other members of the Legal, Risk & Governance Services Team to provide legal support and risk management services for Ulta Beauty. This senior manager level position will also interact regularly with Ulta Beauty’s internal business teams and assist with managing outside counsel. Specifically, this role will work closely with the Company’s digital innovation, procurement, information technology, and eCommerce (including consumer facing websites and mobile applications) teams to provide legal advice in support of Ulta Beauty’s strategic initiatives in the commercial, technology and digital areas. As part of the responsibilities in the technology area, this role will have the opportunity to engage with and provide legal assistance to the Company’s IT Risk Management team on data privacy and security aspects concerning data stewardship, including data privacy protection and analytics. The role may include litigation and claims management responsibilities, related to digital, technology and data privacy.
The successful candidate will have meaningful functional expertise, and business acumen, and the ability to collaborate with business partners across the Company. The role will report to the VP Assistant General Counsel.
The ability to develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with business partners at all levels
across the Company as well as with colleagues on the Legal, Risk & Governance Services Team is a must.
The ideal candidate for this role will have in-house and/or law firm experience supporting consumer facing/retail businesses, excellent counseling skills, the ability to take a strategic and business-focused approach to complex legal issues and an entrepreneurial mindset. YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH ALL THESE GOALS BY:
• Counsel business partners, draft, review and negotiate contracts and transactions involving technology, digital innovation and licensing
• Provide counseling for consumer facing e-platforms including website and mobile application functionality, accessibility and compliance
• Counsel on legal, regulatory and policy developments relating to data stewardship including
business enablement, privacy and cybersecurity
• Develop and support with implementation of effective strategies for maintaining compliance with
data privacy and security laws and regulations
• Support with management of litigation and claims related to digital, and data privacy and security
• Proactively seek opportunities for and implement best practices and process improvements
• Prepare reports and analyses of legal issues, and provide business focused counseling on business matters
• Supervise outside counsel and develop and manage effectively outside counsel budgets
THE ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESS
• JD degree and excellent academic credentials
• Admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois or as required for remote candidates
• 5+ years of legal experience in a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department
Job Skills/Competencies:
• Substantial experience supporting all aspects of a wide variety of technology and commercial
transactions including IT, technology procurement and digital agreements
• Experience providing legal guidance and counseling on consumer facing technologies including
relating to website and app compliance
• Experience with data stewardship, including data privacy and security regulations
• Familiarity with supporting litigation and providing related legal counsel to business teams
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Requisite judgment to define, recommend, gain approval of and implement courses of action to support and enforce Company’s rights and minimize Company’s liabilities
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize time, manage expenses and maximize productivity
• Demonstrated ability to supervise outside counsel independently and effectively
• Ability to build strong relationships with the legal team, business teams and executives
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow
through, and meet concurrent deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with attention to detail, manage tight deadlines and
prioritize business projects
• A strong desire to learn and contribute as part of a growing team
• Positive energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, confidence, and ability to work collaboratively as well as cross-functionally in a dynamic, fast-paced environment are a must
