Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Provides specialty instruction for gardening and cultivation classes and organizes and facilitates cultivate and gardening programs that are individualized to the resident.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certification as a Virginia Master Gardner preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience successfully creating planning and creating garden spaces.
- 2 years past experience teaching gardening to an adult population preferred.
WORK PERFORMED
Job Duties (Essential)
- Assists with garden design and development for the campus
- Works with landscaping contractor but does not have the authority to sign contracts.
- Helps plan and plant spring and fall seasonal color for container and landscape beds.
- Responsible for programing the Cultivate Pillar of Pathways to Wellness
- Aids the Garden Angel Volunteers in their work.
- Coordinates resident garden related trips
- Coordinates cultivate and gardening lectures, workshops, and videos.
- Coordinates the Grown from Seeds Program.
- Coordinates and participates in the Gardening Committee.
- Aids the Flower Guild in their work.
- Provides advice to and assists with the Resident Gardens.
- Provides advice to and assists with Community Herb Garden.
- Responsible for the planning and oversight of the Morning Glory Garden.
- Responsible for the planning and oversight of the Secret Garden.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of gardening and cultivating in the local climate and gardening zone.
- Knowledge of native plant specifies suitable and safe for use with residents having serious cognitive loss.
- Able to read, write and communicate using the English language,
- Ability to teach other grading and cultivation.
- Able to plan, organize and conduct programs, lectures and outings.
- Knowledge of raised bed, container, foundation and turf cultivation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- May include frequent lifting (up to 60lbs).
- Extensive walking, bending, stooping, standing, pushing and pulling.
- Ability to walk on uneven, rough and unpaved surfaces.
- Working inside in climate-controlled spaces plus outside in heat and cold.
- Universal staffing. Flexible schedule is required including the ability to work varied hours including weekends, nights, holidays and during inclement weather.
- Exposure to the sights, sounds and odors of a typical long-term care and health care environment serving senior citizens, some with dementia.
