About the Job
The Town of Brookline Information Technology Department is seeking a hands-on Data Center and Active Directory Manager to perform professional technical work in connection with all areas of data center, servers, operating systems, storage and active directory administration, including the installation and maintenance of all Town wide and School IT systems, Storage Area Network (SAN), security, and network configurations.
The Data Center and Active Directory Manager will manage comprehensive data center infrastructure and oversee both physical and virtual servers across VMware, Windows, and Linux operating systems in conjunction with team members. Manage directory services, including Active Directory, SAML 2.0, and Federation services on hyper cloud environment; set standards and manage end-user accounts, permissions, access rights, access controls and storage allocations in accordance with best practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance. All other related work as required.
Qualifications: We are seeking a flexible, qualified Data Center and Active Directory Manager with a BA/BS in computer science, management information systems, engineering, or related fields. Candidates should have 5 to 7 years of experience in network operations, data center management, desktop and server support in a Windows Server enterprise environment. In addition, at least 3 years technical expertise with Active Directory. SSCP, CISSP, MCSA, MOS of similar certification a plus. Equivalent knowledge via specialized education, training, and/or experience may substitute in part for the educational requirement.

Data Center and Active Directory Manager Job Description
Position Purpose
Performs professional technical work in connection with all areas of data center, servers, operating systems, storage and active directory administration, including the installation and maintenance of all Town wide IT systems, Storage Area Network (SAN), security, and network configurations. All other related work as required.
Supervision
Supervision Scope: Performs technical and responsible duties requiring initiative, creativity, and independent judgment in planning for, management and support of the Town’s network and enterprise infrastructure.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Network and Infrastructure Manager. Once priorities are set, works with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action.
Supervision Given: Vendors, consultants, and virtual project team.
Job Environment
Work may be performed under a variety of conditions and locations which may include time sensitive objectives and stressful situations. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Occasionally attends technical conferences. Regularly attends meetings at various locations within the Town. May be required to work after normal business hours or contacted at home at any time to respond to important situations, emergencies, and items requiring immediate attention.
Operates computers, printers and other peripherals, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
Has regular contact with various Town/School Departments, the general public, computer hardware and software vendors, and software technical support personnel. Interdepartmental contacts involve gathering information regarding their computing needs, answering questions, solving problems, and providing training and support.
Has access to confidential information, which requires the application of appropriate judgment, discretion, and professional office protocols.
Errors could result in substantial confusion and delay, loss or mismanagement of critical information, loss of time to correct errors, critical computing infrastructure not being available, potential financial exposure to the town, and legal ramifications to the Department and Town.
Essential Functions

Data Center Infrastructure
- Manage comprehensive data center infrastructure and oversee both physical and virtual servers across VMware, Windows, and Linux operating systems in conjunction with team members.
- Install, modify and repair computer hardware and software; including new/rebuilt existing servers. Configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc., in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
- Perform patch management of all servers, Town, School, Public Safety and Library utilizing enterprise patch management system.
- Responsible for certificate services, server security through patch management, and handling server backups, restoration, and disaster recovery preparation.
- Analyze system, server, application, network, and input/output device performance. Troubleshoots system issues. Runs diagnostic programs to resolve problems. Utilizes monitoring system for issues and runs reports for all servers to insure maximum uptime.
- Update antivirus controls on all servers, monitors server performance, and resolves technical issues across networks and systems.
- Oversee and track information on data center equipment maintenance, hardware and VMWare maintenance.
- Develop long term infrastructure plans; assists the Network & Infrastructure Manager and the CIO with budgeting; implement new IT software or hardware as required.
- Responsible for enterprise server/data center inventory to include servers, storage, backup appliances and others.
Active Directory Management
- Manage directory services, including Active Directory, SAML 2.0, and Federation services on hyper cloud environment; set standards and manage end-user accounts, permissions, access rights, access controls and storage allocations in accordance with best practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
- Train support staff and perform all other areas of active directory management.
- Responsible for provisioning public school student accounts including onboarding, setting up AD/Gmail accounts utilizing Active Directory and other integrated identity management tools within G Suite; and executes offboarding procedures for departing students.
Other Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the IT security team; collaborate with IT staff to ensure data integrity and security, following industry best practices.
- Run Bi -Weekly Inter domain meeting to discuss any issues, trends and ongoing projects.
- Perform software application maintenance with application managers when necessary, and resolves technical problems with Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), and other systems.
- Assist the Network & Infrastructure Division Manager and the CIO to develop long term plans; update job knowledge through educational opportunities; professional publications; personal and professional networks; explores opportunities to add value to job accomplishments; and conducts research on new products, services, protocols and standards.

- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as required.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
BA/BS in computer science, management information systems, engineering, or related fields. Additional Requirements:
A valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of complex IT protocol and procedures, best security practices, anti-virus protection, and system performance issues. Technical expertise in troubleshooting LANs and Internet connectivity preferably in a Cisco network environment. Proficient in hardware troubleshooting (server, desktop, routers, firewalls, and related devices). Working knowledge or familiarity with security methodologies in an enterprise infrastructure (NIST CEF or Zero Trust).
Ability: Demonstrated Network Performance Tuning, LAN Knowledge, Network Design and Implementation; Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies/ systems/ architectures; Ability to give clear instructions and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various departments; Proficiency in interpersonal communication, presentation, problem solving and analytical skills; Ability to develop schedules and long-range/short range plans to achieve stated goals; Ability to prepare and analyze complex reports; Ability to maintain efficient and effective automated systems.
Skill: Highly skilled in the operation of contemporary IT systems; Demonstrated skill in managing multiple tasks and projects with attention to detail and accuracy. Strong interpersonal and analytical skills; strong written and verbal communication in dealing with peers, end-users and superiors; excellent project management and budgetary skills; Strong organizational skills. Skill in all of the above listed technology, tools and equipment. Expertise in technologies such as VMware vSphere, VSAN, Rubrik or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to respond to end-user helpdesk tickets, emphasizing excellent customer service. Proficient in understanding and implementation of effective VM backup and recovery practices. Experience in working with Pure Storage solutions or equivalent, particularly with flash storage and data management. Familiarity with other similar storage technologies. (ISCSI, NFS and SAN) Proven expertise in utilizing Rubrik for data backup and recovery or equivalent, showcasing strong data management and protection skills or similar technologies. Advantageous experience with other comparable data backup and recovery solutions.
