The role collaborates with actuaries, data scientists, and analysts to understand data requirements and develops scalable solutions. They build and optimize data pipelines, integrating data from various sources, ensuring data quality and consistency, and implement data governance practices.

The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines, models, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and other data infrastructure to support the organization's data needs. The role collaborates with actuaries, data scientists, and analysts to understand data requirements and develops scalable solutions. They build and optimize data pipelines, integrating data from various sources, ensuring data quality and consistency, and implement data governance practices.
What will your job entail?
Essential Functions
- Responsible for data preparation, data blending, and the creation of data models / sets.
- Responsible for designing, building, and testing several complex workflows in Alteryx.
- Develop Dashboards by understanding business needs, interpreting the integrated data, and translating this into usable visualizations to drive business decisions, interpreting results and how to utilize the dashboards.
- Liaise with corporate units, front-line business units and external capital providers on things relating to reporting and business intelligence.
- Promote information management principals, practices, guidelines and standards within the actuarial organization, while also adhering to regulatory and professional standards and guidelines, in addition to enterprise business rules and compliance requirements.
- Define compelling business arguments to elicit change on future or existing reporting and information sharing issues.
- Responsible for triage requests, gather user requirements and ultimately facilitate ad hoc report / data requests with a quick turn-around time.
- Responsible for maintaining documentation of database workflows, requirements, policies, and procedures.
Education/Experience/Skills Required:
- Applicable proficiency with relational database tools, including SQL.
- Applicable proficiency with data visualization tools, including Tableau, Power BI, SSRS, or similar.
- Applicable proficiency with ETL tools, including Alteryx, SSIS, or similar.
- Applicable proficiency with Excel, and other MS Office products.
- Strong attention to detail and capability to troubleshoot incomplete/inconsistent data.
- Ability to work with large data sets.
- Strong capability to balance multiple projects and customers simultaneously.
- Ability to think flexibly and react nimbly during critical moments and the ability to make connections between data and business strategies.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate, analyze, design, and implement solutions based on technical requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively between technical and non-technical team members.
- Proactively automate data processes.
- 2+ years of relevant experience.
Desired:
- Familiarity with the insurance industry, particularly the specialty insurance sector.
- Knowledge and/or familiarity with actuarial practices, processes, or modeling.
- Experience working in cloud environment, particularly Azure
- Applicable proficiency with automation schedules, including ActiveBatch, Azure DevOps, or similar.
- Knowledge of other common data / statistical / coding technologies, including Python, R, @Risk, or similar.
