The Decision Systems Group (QAX) harness the power of data science, decision science, and software and systems engineering to deliver actionable insights for our nation’s response in critical moments. We support multiple agencies within the US Government by developing innovative analytics systems to uncover activities such as epidemic hotspots, illegal activities, anomalous behavior, and cyber-crime. You will implement and apply computationally tractable data science solutions and corresponding data architectures to address the needs of our sponsors. As a Data Scientist you will...
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams to develop data collection, processing, and analytic pipelines for analyzing large-scale, complex data
- Develop AI/ML algorithms to describe data, predict events, and prescribe courses of action that directly reflect the Sponsor's needs and support the Sponsor's decision-making activities
- Collaborate with developers and engineers to develop data architectures and software applications to support analytic algorithms.
- Clearly present and communicate results to both JHU/APL and Sponsor leadership.
- Potentially travel locally to sponsor sites on an occasional basis.
You meet our minimum qualifications for this position if you...
- Possess a B.S. in Computer Science, Information Science, Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research, or a related discipline. plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Have experience with statistics, machine learning algorithms, or general algorithm development.
- Have a knowledge of modern large-scale data systems and architectures.
- Possess solid software development skills.
- Exhibit excellent social skills, the ability to work independently, excellent written and oral communications skills, and good organizational skills.
- Are able to acquire a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have a M.S. or Ph.D. in the disciplines listed above, and have working knowledge of state-of-the-art large-scale data approaches and architectures. e.g. experience with quantum algorithms.
- Are experienced with software engineering processes and techniques.
- Are experienced with graph databases and analytics

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Minimum Rate:$90,000 AnnuallyMaximum Rate:$220,000 Annually
