Position Description
We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator/Engineer to manage and optimize our database environments across Linux and Windows operating systems. The primary focus will be on Oracle, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft database technologies (e.g., SQL Server). The successful candidate will ensure the stability, security, and high performance of databases, supporting business-critical applications. This role involves database design, implementation, backup and recovery strategies, performance tuning, and security, while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless database operations.
Performance Objectives:
- First 30 days
- Participate in department training and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to learn about company solutions and relevant specialties.
- Discuss your goals and expectations with your team leader(s).
- Read and review all relevant team resources and materials.
- Immerse yourself in team meetings and discussions to understand the team structure and individuals that make it up.
- Discover the systems we use and the processes the team follows.
- Join any relevant database projects and assist with additional database tasks, as needed.
- Within 60 days
- Support team meetings and agendas.
- Review current learning materials and participate in feedback to identify possible learning gaps.
- Recommend and implement solutions through process improvements, growth and training opportunities, or software upgrades.
- Continue database and project management work.
- After 90 days to one year
- Develop interpersonal connections and relationships to effectively accomplish project objectives and deliverables.
- Use the knowledge and experience gained in the first 60 days to help provide oversight across ServiceNow development and delivery activities.
- Address design issues to deliver quality solutions to customers, including participating in the database platform governance.
- Expand your database administration role by working independently on tasks and projects within the Enterprise Databases team.
Position Requirements
- More than five years of experience working with relational database systems.
Strong ability to design, implement, and maintain Oracle databases in accordance with application requirements.
Strong proficiency in Red Hat Linux environment.
- Demonstrates strong experience with a variety of relational database management systems (RDBMS), such as SQL Server, Azure SQL, Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL, and SAP HANA.
- Possesses expert-level understanding of Microsoft SQL Server or Azure SQL databases.
- Exhibits expert-level understanding of databases, enterprise systems, web applications, and related software services.
- Showcases expert-level proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL), including writing stored procedures, triggers, and queries that can rank, group, filter, sort, and join data.
- Possesses expert knowledge of database design principles and the ability to set up relational tables.
- Utilizes logical and physical design, as well as Entity Relationship (E/R) tools.
- Demonstrates strong experience with SQL Server cluster, replication, and Always On Availability Groups (AG) skills.
- Implements database encryption at rest and in transit.
- Advanced experience identifying and resolving database performance bottlenecks.
- Strong level of experience using database monitoring tools and frameworks.
- Applies Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) patterns and practices to integrate data streams and migrate data.
- Ability to write and debug scripts in Ruby, Python, Perl, PowerShell, C, Java, or other programming languages.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Business Administration, or certification in a related field.
Preferred
- Possesses knowledge of on-premises and cloud-connected enterprise infrastructure software, including operational systems like Microsoft Windows and Linux/UNIX, patch management, virus protection, Microsoft Office platforms such as SharePoint and Teams, Active Directory and Azure Active Directory, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name System (DNS), Microsoft Exchange, Identity (ID) management systems, and various database platforms like SQL Server, Azure SQL, Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL, and SAP Hana.
- Proficient in Windows Administration, specifically in Windows server performance tuning.
- Skilled in installation, configuration, and tactical diagnosis of Business Intelligence (BI) solutions, including Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, and other data visualization tools like Raw and chart.js.
- Competent in Transact-SQL (TSQL), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), Power BI, and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
- Possesses excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
- Successfully drove change within an organization and led complex technical projects.
- Efficiently manages priorities, context switches, and shared resources.
- Works well in a fast-paced environment with a user-centered, iterative design and development process.
- Communicates technical information to non-technical audiences and business concepts to technical audiences.
- Identifies risks and escalates issues appropriately.
- Prioritizes competing incidents, service requests, or projects, and organizes schedules to meet deadlines.
- Prepares clear, concise reports, documentation, and correspondence.
- Maintains current knowledge of the field by learning new and existing software, applications, databases, and hardware through formal, informal, and on-the-job training and self-study.
- Proficient in gathering business requirements and offering meaningful solutions.
- Communicates professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, and works professionally and productively with all encountered in the course of work, including personnel supporting departments, vendors, and consultants.
- Handles sensitive and confidential material and adheres to worldwide data security, with experience writing documentation for design and feature requirements.
- Demonstrates regular and reliable attendance and performance.
- Experienced in presenting to all levels of internal and external users.
