Database Intern

The ideal candidates are energetic – a must for this industry - highly motivated, proficient at transforming concepts into actions, detail-oriented, and able to quickly come up to speed on new technologies and concepts. 

Responsibilities: 

• Support the development of data migration tools and processes from MySQL to PostgreSQL to encompass the data footprint of an additional service. 

• Convert existing database schema (Tables, Views, Stored Procedures, and other objects,) from MySQL to Postgres 

• Create, execute, and document validations of the migrated data and converted structure to prove equivalency 

• Develop SQL, python, and shell files that interact with the database to support conversion and data migration 

• Expand existing automated database tests 

• Work with and mentor other software engineers as it relates to database engineering and development. 

Qualifications: 

• Experience, education, or other evidence of interest and knowledge in related areas and technologies 

• Database engineering or data engineering strongly preferred 

• Minimum of 2 years relevant experience or education 

• Knowledge of basic database concepts including Tables, Views, Procedures, and Constraints. 

• Exposure to MySQL or Postgres preferred 

• Ability to grasp new concepts and learn in-process 

• Basic knowledge of Linux  

• WSL & Ubuntu/Debian preferred 

• Basic knowledge of workbench or IDE tools such as MySQL Workbench, dbeaver, SSMS etc. 

• Self-starting and ability to work with minimal supervision 

• Strong ability to write and consume written communication 

• Ability to formulate relevant questions and asses personal knowledge gaps 

• Basic knowledge of software configuration management principals and tools such as git 

Preferred Skills: 

• Linux/Unix system administration knowledge 

• Experience with database table design and data normalization 

• Basic knowledge of document storage and search concepts within a database 

• Experience with coding concepts such as DRY 

• Experience or strong interest with/in the energy industry 

• Professional or published experience writing and iteratively improving documentation 

• Comfort with balancing multiple priorities while enforcing standards 
   

The Database Intern is a paid position. The hourly rate is $25 per hour. The ideal can work a minimum of 20 hours per week up to 30 hours or more. College credits are not offered.

Prepare: 

Research data infrastructure types. Be prepared to have a high-level conversation about the difference between data lake, OLTP/OLAP databases, object storage solutions like Amazon S3, SQL vs NoSQL, and distributed processing frameworks (i.g. Apache Spark.)  

Applicants' ability to do basic research on these topics is a chance to demonstrate their ability to quickly absorb and apply new concepts.
