Detention Specialist/ Control Room Operator - Caroline Detention Facility

About the Job
This is a non-certified position at the Caroline Detention Facility. Sensitive nature of work requires the incumbent to exercise discretion and retain confidentiality of information obtained by discussions/recorded data.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may be assigned to duties in both the Control Center and the Receptionist Post to include visitation.
Control Center
A. Communicates over the facility's telephone, intercom and radio systems with staff, the public, visitors and other agencies.
B. Controls all persons entering and leaving the facility's secure perimeter by ensuring positive identification and verifying their permission to enter or leave.
C. Controls all internal movement of staff and detainees by remote operation of gates and doors.
Monitors the facility's emergency system's alarm panels and responds appropriately.
E. Maintains required records and logs.
F. Issues and receives equipment, keys and other items according to CDF Policy and Procedure.
G. Maintains sanitation standards for the Post.
H. Ensures all shift paperwork is sorted and forwarded to the appropriate staff in accordance with the Detention Specialist post order.
I. Ensures all Work Order and Job Request data is entered into the Maintenance Work Order database and forwarded to the appropriate maintenance staff in accordance with the Detention Specialist post order.
Receptionist
A. Functions as the facility's Receptionist and primary contact person during regular business hours.
B. Responds to and screens all incoming facility calls and directs them to the appropriate extensions; greet public and official visitors to the facility and, when applicable, contacts appropriate staff to respond to visitor's concerns; respond to questions from callers/visitors relating to detainees.
C. Trains new personnel on functions of facility phones.
D. Assists in the Visitation and Control Center as dictated by the facility schedule.
E. Maintains detainee visitor lists and forwards purged lists according to the Detention Specialist post order.
F. Assists the Mail Clerk when needed.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE
High School Diploma or GED; knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia Board of
Corrections Standards for Local Jails and Lockups, the American Correctional
Association's Standards for Adult Local Detention Facilities, Jail Industries,
maintaining basic First Aid and CPR certificates; neat professional appearance and
proper attitude; bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) helpful.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good vision; able to hear conversations within noisy groups; mobility to walk, run,
stoop, and bend; capable of working under stressful conditions, in high and low
temperatures, and around dust, odors, and noise; olfactory senses sufficient to
detect smoke from fire and/or specific prohibited substances (e.g., marijuana); able
to operate telephone; ability to communicate with public.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Valid Virginia Driver's.
SCHEDULE: 10-hour shifts and must be able to work every other weekend.
