About the Job
DevOps Engineer - REMOTE position
Why you want to work at Flexion:
We’re looking for a DevOps Engineer with an unwavering passion for working in autonomous, self-directed teams to build complex systems using lean, agile mindsets—this means delivering incremental business value with each sprint and enabling options at all scales. Most of the work we do is on large-scale, enterprise-wide systems (both commercial and government)—this project includes the development and maintenance of a data management system which supports the management and oversight of grant recipient organizations and program operations at the local, state, regional and national levels.
At Flexion (an agile software company that’s been delivering excellence for over 24 years), our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain autonomous and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems by functioning collaboratively—this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (business application software engineering, database engineering, DevOps, security engineering, etc.) as needed. Every member within a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team’s success, which mirrors the company’s overall flat structure.
What the job looks like:
You’ll be part of a multi-disciplinary, agile application development team tasked with operating and enhancing an enterprise government system. The project work is primarily remote but may require some client on-site work estimated at <10%.
Collaborating with your team to design, code, test, debug, deploy and document software in an agile environment. Collaboration will mean pair programming, ensemble programming (“Mobbing”), or swarming with teammates for most of the day.
Working with other DevOps Engineers, Full Stack Software Engineers, UX Researchers and Designers, and Product Managers to strive to build and maintain an enterprise grant management system.
Tackle a wide variety of technical problems.
Exercise your full tool-belt of skills and experience.
Expected to contribute to non-DevOps work, such as full stack development and collaborating on support issues, as needed.
Why we want to hire you:
You thrive working in a dynamic environment and think, design, and code with the knowledge that things will change. You want to work with team members that challenge you every day. You demonstrate an unwavering commitment to automated code coverage.
You have:
6+ years of combination of application development / DevOps experience.
A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience
Strong collaborative and communication skills
A passion for learning new technologies and the ability to do so quickly
Ability to write high-quality code, tests, and documentation efficiently
Knowledge and experience with several of the following:
Experience building Pipeline Automation with GitHub Actions
Experienced in automation using infrastructure-as-code (IAC) with Terraform
Shell scripting
Working experience with container technology such as Docker
Experience with AWS
Experience in security aspects of cloud infrastructure, vulnerability scanning and remediation, threat modeling & detection, static and dynamic testing, application logging, security documentation, and monitoring and alerting. Bias towards proactive monitoring and shifting testing & security left with tools such as SonarQube and NewRelic
Experience with automated unit testing, end to end testing, smoke tests striving for 100% automated test coverage
General familiarity and experience in full stack application development
Experience with cloud.gov preferred
Experience with Java preferred
