Who We Are

Located in the scenic Puget Sound area with Mount Rainier in the distance, Tacoma is the third largest city in Washington State with a thriving and diverse community of over 200,000 residents. Tacoma Community College (TCC) was built on the ancestral territory of Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Puyallup and Squaxin Island Tribes. The 1854 Medicine Creek Treaty forcibly removed them to Reservations to make way for colonizers; we recognize the privilege of utilizing this land has come at great cost. We honor the resilience of the Puyallup and Squaxin Island people, who still live here, defend their rights, and contribute greatly to the well-being of our community. Our institution aims to increase partnerships and community ties with the local indigenous populations. Moreover, TCC stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and the Black community by further strengthening collaboration with the Black Student Union as well as community entities such as the Tacoma-Pierce County Black Collective, the Tacoma Urban League, and local black-owned businesses.  In addition, we strongly support the Stop Asian Hate movement and have an active Asian Pacific Islander Student Club as well as an Asian and Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Coalition. TCC is committed to developing more culturally responsive curricula by infusing and incorporating more educational content focused on the lives, experiences, and contributions of Native, Black, Asian, and other marginalized communities. Essential Functions

Full-Time Faculty – The primary responsibility of teaching faculty is student teaching and learning. To fulfill this responsibility, teaching faculty will:

Essential Functions: 

• Prepare and teach Associate-level curriculum relating to diagnostic medical sonography – didactic and laboratory instruction.
• Collaborate with program faculty and staff on curriculum and program development incorporating current educational theories and research and integrating new and innovative approaches to instruction. 
• Develop and utilize a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of learners in in-person classroom, lab and clinical environment as well as virtual and asynchronous classrooms.
• Employ innovative and inclusive teaching methods to engage a diverse student population.
• Identifies equipment needs and advocates for a current teaching lab environment.
• Foster a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student success.
• Collaborate with an advisory committee of community partners to keep curriculum relevant to local industry. 
• Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback using program criteria and expectations. 
• Maintain regular office hours according to the current CBA to support and improve student retention and success. 
• Utilize learning management systems (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) and other learning technology to elevate teaching and learning.
• Develop and foster community partnerships.
• Work with local employers and students to facilitate internships. 
• Support division/department goals. 
• Actively participate in departmental responsibilities to include curriculum review, program development, and faculty meetings.
• Serve on college committees and participate in college governance. 
• Participate in the college’s professional development and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion events and training. 
• Participate in department, division and college outreach activities. Participate in the recruitment and retention of diagnostic medical sonography students, particularly historically under-represented groups, such as black, brown, and female students.
• In collaboration with Program Director, assures compliance with accreditation standards and maintains communications with accrediting bodies ensures accreditation standards.
• Meets institutional accreditation standards for areas of instructional responsibility and participate in and support overall college accreditation processes.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Experience: 

• Graduate of an accredited diagnostic medical sonography educational program. 
• Associate degree in diagnostic medical sonography or related imaging field.
• 3 years recent clinical experience as a sonographer.
• Ability to meet State of Washington vocational certification requirements. 
• Current BLS or Healthcare CPR certification, CPR/AED certification.

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field.
• Full-time teaching experience in a diagnostic medical sonography program, including clinical coordination and curriculum development.
• Experience in the development and implementation of diagnostic medical sonography curriculum.
• Experience in participating in or leading a JRC-DMS accreditation processes.
• Hold credentialing as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), or Advanced Practice Sonographer (APS). 

• Successfully complete a criminal history background check prior to employment.

• Ability to inspire, motivate, teach and mentor students in the profession of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. 
• Strong commitment to the profession of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. 
• Knowledge and experience in a wide variety of health care settings and facilities. 
• A high level of technology and application skills in the teaching and/or health care field.
• Strong critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with students, faculty, staff and external community partners in both online and face to face environments.

• Ethical decision-making ability and sound professional judgment. 
• Dedication to group problem solving and collaboration.
