SUMMARY:This position is located in the Operations Division with the Oklahoma City-County Health Department (OCCHD). The employee is responsible for providing nutritional education to clients, in both English and Spanish, through the preparation and presentation of formal classes, individual counseling and consultation. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:This is a summary of the duties and responsibilities commonly found within this classification. This position functions at the entry level (Tier 1) as defined by the Council on Linkages Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals with a primary focus on the following domains:Communication SkillsCommunity Partnership SkillsHealth Equity Skills ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Lead hour long group sessions to large groups (approximately 50 people) both in person and online over nutrition education, physical activity and behavior change topics in both English and Spanish.Counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and self management to improving their quality of life in both English and Spanish.Assess health needs, diet restrictions, and current health plans to provide self management counseling.Perform medical tests such as finger stick, blood pressure, height, weight, and other measurements to assess health status.Follow guidelines when using medical assessment, client history and risks to educate client about their health and make referrals.Refer clients to additional agencies or programs as neededAssist with providing nutrition consultation, in-service education, and training to other health professionals.Communicates with other departments and external partners to present health education activities and materials after assessing their needs.Assists with planning and presenting general health promotional speeches, lectures, workshops, and demonstrations using various audio/visual equipment both in person and online in both English and Spanish.Perform written and oral translation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English using proper grammar and punctuation.Represents OCCHD at health fairs, conferences, schools, and other places of public gatherings.Ability to make recommendations to clients and their families related to dietary plans and lifestyle modification, food selection and preparation.Assist with preparing manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching.Assist with planning training programs for topics such as chronic disease management and prevention, nutrition, lifestyle medication, physical activity, weight loss, and life skills to prevent disease.Collaborates with health specialists and civic groups to determine community health needs and the availability of services.Position requires regularly working one evening per week with occasional additional evenings and/or weekends. Time is adjusted to maintain standard 40-hour work week. Maintains appropriate confidentiality and follows agency guidelines and statutory regulations regarding the release of client or agency information.Assist with the recruitment, training, and evaluation of volunteers.Travel to off-site locations to perform job duties as needed.Completes required training in support of duties and responsibilities of this position.At the direction of OCCHD Chief Executive Office and Public Health Officer or designee, the incumbent will be assigned a variety of specific job duties and responsibilities as a member of the OCCHD Emergency Preparedness and Response Program Team, (i.e., Bioterrorism Response Program). Also, as a member of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Program Team, the employee is required to complete all necessary emergency responder training and may be designated as a member of the first-responder team.In accordance with our designation of a PHAB Accredited health department and explicit commitment to a culture of continuous quality improvement, employees will receive Quality Improvement (QI) training deemed necessary by their supervisor.
