Dietitian Per Diem Days Position Summary
The registered dietitian provides nutritional services to patients throughout the hospital, via a comprehensive nutrition assessment which may include management of enteral nutrition, management of parenteral nutrition, diagnosis of malnutrition, evaluation of nutrition-related lab parameters and medical history, and nutrition education/counseling as part of a member of the interdisciplinary team to improve results and maximize patient outcomes. This position reports to the Director of Food Service.
Special Skills:
- Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with interdisciplinary staff (including but not limited to pharmacists, physicians, nurse practitioners, resident physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietary staff, etc.)
- Ability to prioritize patient caseload efficiently utilizing professional/clinical judgement.
- Proficiency in calculating parenteral nutrition prescriptions.
- Proficiency in calculating enteral nutrition prescriptions.
- Ability to utilize critical thinking skills to approach complex medical cases.
- Ability to approach patient care with empathy and compassion.
Job Duties:
1. Obtains and evaluates nutrition history, weight history and medical history. Assesses patient's knowledge of nutrition and individual disease state while providing appropriate detailed education/counseling to the patient and their family regarding nutritional status, adequacy measures, fluid status, and all nutrition-related lab parameters pertaining to their disease process as needed. (20%)
2. Completes comprehensive patient assessments for the individual in accordance with established Federal and State guidelines. (20%)
3. Monitors patient's adherence and response to nutrition therapy, and adjusts therapy as needed to achieve and sustain an optimal nutritional status. Documents patient's response to therapy in progress notes. (20%)
4. Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team on the management of nutritional status and fluid status. Participates in interdisciplinary rounds in ICU as needed. (10%)
5. Communicates with physicians and facility staff regarding nutritional goals and optimization. Manages parenteral and enteral nutrition through an individualized, comprehensive approach following ASPEN and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics guidelines. (20%)
6. Works with and collaborates with the food service staff, including dietary aides, dietary cooks, and dietary supervisors as needed to provide patients with adequate nutritional provisions. (10%)
THE DIETITIAN PER DIEM DAYS CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: For Registered Dietitians credentialed prior to January 1, 2024: a minimum of a B.S. degree from an accredited college or university with a major in food, nutrition, or dietetics is required. As of January 1, 2024: newly credentialed Registered Dietitians must obtain a graduate degree. Any additional education must be obtained as required by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: At least 1 year of work experience in adult clinical dietetics is preferred, but not required. Critical care experience of at least 1 year is preferred, but not required. Willingness to learn critical care nutrition is required.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: A valid Registered Dietitian through the Commission on Dietetic Registration, in good standing, is required.
REQUIRED COURSE(S) TRAINING: A current Food Handler Card from Maricopa County and/or an ANSI-accredited food handler training certificate may be required, subject to individual hospital/facility requirements.
