Director, Artificial Intelligence (Austin, TX)

Acrisure Innovation is a fast paced team building innovative software to disrupt the $6T+ insurance industry.  Our mission is to help the world share its risk more intelligently to power a more vibrant economy. To do this, we are transforming insurance distribution and underwriting into a science.

By leveraging technology to push the boundaries of understanding and transferring risk, we are systematically converting data into predictions, insights, and choices, and we believe we can remove the constraints associated with scale, scope, and learning that have existed in the insurance industry for centuries. 

We are a small team of extremely high caliber engineers with a diverse background across industries and technologies. Our engineers have worked at large companies like Google and Amazon, high frequency trading companies, and a variety of smaller startups, including successful startup founders.

The Role:

As a Director of Artificial Intelligence at Acrisure Innovation, you'll be an essential part of the team building world-class AI to transform the insurance industry.  This is a cross functional leadership role that involves collaborating with the product team, other engineering leaders and stakeholders. 

The Director of Artificial Intelligence is responsible for overseeing people, resources and processes necessary to deliver on AI goals while providing technical leadership. The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of strategic vision, exceptional leadership skills, a strong technical foundation, and a proven track record in delivering AI solutions to production use cases. This role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of AI development, from infrastructure to execution, ensuring alignment with our product partners and company objectives, and ultimately demonstrating the impact AI can have for Acrisure.

Our technology runs on Google Cloud and is configured with Kubernetes, leveraging various services in that environment. Our data storage layer includes BigQuery, BigTable, and Postgres. We code primarily in Kotlin, Python, Java, and JavaScript and make use of many frameworks, including Dataflow, Cloud AI Platform, KubeFlow, Spring, and React. Our models primarily leverage a Python stack, and are delivered through either Python or Kotlin services.

Here are some of the ways in which you'll achieve impact:

• Attract, develop and retain top talent for the AI organization. Includes recruiting and interviewing candidates.
• Enable the use of consistent tools, processes and documentation to both improve the development lifecycle and support onboarding new team members. Includes identifying opportunities for increased efficiencies that might positively impact the team.
• Lead and mentor a team of AI and Software engineers building products across machine learning, generative AI, and data science initiatives.
• Provide career development and growth opportunities for team members while developing a culture of accountability. 
• Work with key stakeholders to develop the AI vision, organization roadmaps, and concrete requirements for projects.
• Drive improvements to quality, resilience and scale through both process and technology using a data driven approach.
• Actively participate in architecture design and guide implementation to drive both alignment across the organization and ensure the systems being built are robust and maintainable.

You may be fit for this role if you have:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, or a related field with a strong knowledge of computer science fundamentals and engineering principles.
• Demonstrated career progression from individual contributor to people manager, e.g., 8+ years of industry experience in AI/ML Engineering including 4+ years in a leadership role.
• Experience mentoring and guiding the professional and technical development of members of the team.
• Expertise with modern software tools, libraries, and languages, with experience delivering production models at scale.
• A strong foundational knowledge in AI techniques and technologies.
• Product and customer focused, with a passion for delighting the end user.
• Empathy, kindness towards others, a positive attitude, and self-awareness.
• Willingness and ability to work from the headquarters in Austin, Texas.
• Eagerness to work for an early stage company to experiment, discover product-market fit and are focused on maximizing business impact. 

It's not expected that any single candidate would have expertise across all of these areas. If you are a solid engineer and eager to work on data or insurance related platforms/products, we are eager to talk to you.
