Job Description
Writes, reviews and implements patient safety policies and activities.
Helps build and implement systems to promote the culture of safety within the Medical Center.
Works with hospital staff in identifying and defining data elements for tracking and trending.
Reviews and investigates identified event reports, quality referrals, and patient complaints.
Analyzes and interprets data.
Designs reports for tracking and trending and to support process improvement activities.
Develops ongoing risk management/patient safety awareness education program for clinical services.
Recommends, facilitates and participates in root cause analysis and failure mode and effect analysis.
Advises administration on risk management issues and provides supports in claims management and litigation.
- Manages the MUSC Health - Orangeburg Patient Safety/Clinical Risk Management Program.
- Assists department directors and staff in recognizing patient safety/risk management issues and reducing risk/patient harm within their departments and other areas of the medical center.
- Manages data input of reported events.
- Reviews and investigates serious events identified through reports, peer collaboration, quality referrals, and patient complaints.
- Designs, develops and distributes reports related to patient safety/risk management events to assist the Board of Trustees, administration, department leaders, medical staff committees, process improvement teams and others as identified.
- Supports the claims management and litigation process.
- Conducts orientation and periodic reviews and educational programs on risk management and patient safety standards,requirements and issues.
- Recommends, facilitates and participates in root cause analysis (RCA) and failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA.)
Manages a system for RCA and FMEA documentation of actions and follow-up.
Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to use hands, reach, talk, see and hear.
Must possess the ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific, clinical and business journals, financial reports and legal documents. Must possess the ability to write reports and correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications:
Registered Nurse with current South Carolina licensure and a minimum of five years' experience. MSN preferred. Excellent verbal and communication skills. Computer literate.
