Sam Schwartz, a TYLin Company, is seeking a Director + General Manager to lead our New Jersey and Pennsylvania interdisciplinary team (engineering, planning, transit and rail). We are searching for a seasoned leader with an extensive industry network to define and execute a strategic plan for our firm’s growing New Jersey and Pennsylvania business. Qualities should include a solution-focused approach with the ability to lead conceptual and final design, operations planning, problem solving, and various analyses; experience leading business development, client relationships, and pursuits within the public & private sectors; the ability to communicate persuasively and develop positive team dynamics; and the ability to understand and anticipate client and business needs while successfully managing day-to-day project demands. The ideal candidate would have involvement in national transportation organizations such as The American Public Transportation Association (APTA), National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), (American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) or similar organizations.
Responsibilities:The selected individual will perform various tasks, such as:
- Developing/implementing strategic plans related to the practice area.
- Establishing and advancing a full suite of business development activities.
- Managing complex transportation planning and engineering projects.
- Prioritizing, defining, and delegating workflow to employees and various consultant teams.
- Managing inter-office teams.
- Leading and/or supporting hiring and recruiting efforts.
- Collaborating with and presenting to public agency staff.
- Maintaining a thorough understanding of the transportation industry and industry trends, and a strong professional network.
- Identifying/foreseeing client needs and potential project challenges and work opportunities.
- Understanding and interpreting data analytics results to drive development of recommendations and solutions.
Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities:
- Self-starter who is focused on the initiative to grow the practice.
- Leadership skills to guide and develop the team including mentoring and coaching staff.
- Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, representing interests of the client
- Ability to interpret/synthesize data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Advanced ability to independently manage workflow, budgets, and oversee junior staff
- Industry thought leadership (public speaking, presentations, publications, etc.)
Ideal candidates will possess a working knowledge of any the following areas:
- Transportation/Traffic/Civil Engineering
- Transportation Planning
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
- Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSMO)
- Transit and Rail Planning/Engineering
- Mobility as a Service
- Asset Management & Maintenance
- 15+ years’ experience in transportation planning/engineering/safety and design analysis.
- MS in Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering; Transportation Engineering, or satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.
- AICP and/or PE certification/licensure a plus.
- Flexibility to work on-site and non-standard business hours occasionally, including occasional travel to client sites.
- Business development or client relationship experience.
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills.
- Experience in developing competitive technical proposals.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office.
