Job DescriptionData Science and Analytics is an ambitious team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers with a unique blend of Business, Scientific, and Machine Learning expertise that seeks to unleash the full potential of AbbVie’s data assets by bringing technology and/or data and insights to the forefront of decision making via fit-for-purpose solutions.
The Director II, Data Science and Analytics is a leadership role and is responsible for driving vision, strategy, talent management and operations delivery. Identifies new capabilities and opportunities to drive analytics innovation and value creation. Fosters a culture of experimentation to enable data-driven insights for complex business problems. Influences cross-functional leaders to unleash the full potential of data and advanced analytics techniques like Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Develops strategies in anticipation for future Clinical Development and R&D needs.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Brings people, processes, and technologies together to define and generate value from the Data Science and Analytics strategy.
- Accountable for optimization and standardization of operations for Data Science & Analytics operating model
- Accountable for building sustainable business strategy and for managing execution against available budget and resources.
- Lead next generation technology and process to enable enterprise data analytics on pace with emerging integrated data sources (biomarker/translational, big data, digital sources, real world data, pharmacovigilance data, clinical trial data); Monitors emerging trends across the external technology and analytics environment. Assess impacts to current and future strategies.
- Establishes an environment and structures to foster entrepreneurial culture and continuous improvement. Build strong lasting relationships with cross functional leaders and staff. Cultivates future leaders in Data Science & Analytics and other functions.
- Identifies new capabilities and opportunities to drive analytics innovation and value creation for clinical development & R&D. Forms cross-functional teams to implement new capabilities; Accountable for crafting functional area strategies while ensuring alignment with the cross-functional stakeholder groups.
- Influences the cross-functional stakeholders and Sr. Executives to identify opportunities to unleash the full-potential of data and analytics, including advanced ML techniques and Artificial Intelligence
- Translate R&D strategy into functional area plans. Works with cross-functional leaders to gain alignment on project prioritization and timelines.
- Ensures adherence to federal regulations and applicable local regulations, Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), ICH Guidelines, AbbVie Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and to functional quality standards. Stays abreast of new and/or evolving local regulations, guidelines and policies related to clinical development.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree statistics, analytics, bioinformatics, data science or equivalent field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Must have 10-12+ years of experience with enabling novel analytics capabilities across business areas with 5-6 years of experience leading a team or cross functional initiatives.
- Expertise in current and emerging technologies (e.g., Data Visualizations, Big Data, AI, Machine Learning, NLP/NLG, Cognitive Analytics etc.) preferred.
- Intermediate proficiency with visualization tools like Spotfire, Tableau or equivalent
- Track record with building high-performing Analytics and Data Science teams; Ability to attract, challenge, develop and retain specialized talent with expertise in clinical development.
- Experience with Machine Learning and other advanced analytics techniques preferred.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate analytical and technical concepts in layman’s terms.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills. Track record with scaling multiple data science and analytics capabilities across the function/enterprise
- Demonstrated history of leading in a fast-paced environment and delivering meaningful impact on business outcomes
- Demonstrated ability to influence Sr. Executives and cross-functional leaders.
- Deep contextual knowledge of clinical development / R&D functional areas and related processes is preferred.
- Proven track-record with leading complex cross-functional initiatives and change management efforts.
- Expert knowledge of decision support methodologies and technologies
- Ability to manage data integration projects through strategic approaches that incorporate cross-functional business needs.
- Strong leadership, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills required for advancing the implementation, enhancement, and integration of technology and business processes, and for interactions across sites and with other functional areas.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
