ROLE SUMMARY
The Sr. Director of Construction oversees and supports the Construction Managers and will report to the Vice President of Construction. The Director of Construction is accountable for ensuring the safe and high-quality execution of multiple projects at one time. Being proactive to prevent potential problems and working toward the mitigation of any issues impacting construction of the solar plant. As well as facilitate a culture of respect, safety and collaboration amongst the team and external partners. To Facilitate growth, the Director of Construction will hire Construction Managers and be a direct site presence, at times fulfilling the Construction Manager Role for projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
In conjunction with their Construction Staff, the Construction Director will:
- Supervise, support, and coordinate with Construction Managers
- Supervise the execution, and optimization of pre-construction
- Execution of Construction business initiatives to achieve goals and objectives.
- Provide assistance to the Construction team; build, direct and coordinate the team, ensuring efficient and cost-effective utilization of staff and sub-contractors.
- Develop and implement department tools and workflows to increase efficiency for construction teams.
- Achieve stated targets and standards for Construction utilization & billability performance.
- Present monthly information to leadership, including cost, utilization/billability & labor forecasts.
- Responsible for ensuring alignment and support of staff development, quality control and resource coordination.
- Responsible for interpreting policies, purposes, and goals of the organization to staff.
- Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
- All other duties as assigned. Support progress at sites before, during and after active construction for quality control and reporting.
- Assist with change, risk, and quality management.
- Communicate with stakeholders as needed.
- Oversee all aspects of the project schedule as it relates to permitting, material delivery, and the construction process.
- Assist with project engineering plan design review, evaluation and implementation.
- Multi-document review and quality control related to guiding agency requirements.
- Attend and lead pre-construction meetings via conference calls and in-person meetings.
- Identify potential problems and corrective actions that need to be implemented on current and future work in a timely manner.
Planning
- Verify constructability, resource allocations, and assess field status of projects and resolve issues as needed.
- Vehicle and equipment forecasting.
- Maintenance and repair scheduling.
- Milestone and completion forecasting.
- Material needs forecasting.
- Resource sharing with other activities.
- Facilitate defining a scope of work, construction goals, and stakeholder deliverables for each project.
Workforce Management
- Work closely with partners to develop schedules, estimates and workforce forecasts
- Build crew makeup/size.
- Develop planned production rates.
- Track and manage production rates.
- Crew rotation coverage to facilitate production.
- Discipline/staff management.
- Subcontractor selection and management
- Ultimately responsible for the execution of the project safety plan.
- Ensure safety program is being followed across all projects.
- Track and adjust crews for production, safety, behavior etc.
- Interact daily with Construction Managers, SunGrid frontline supervision, subcontractors, and consultants to provide assistance and guidance as needed, in the coordination of deliverables such as scopes of work, capital need assessments, contract documents, schedule of values, submittals, contracts, applications, and permitting
Equipment & Tools
- Develop & forecast tool lists for crews.
- Develop & forecast equipment needs list for crews.
- Monitor abuse/damage/use of equipment and tools.
- Ultimately responsible for tools/equipment spending and overages.
- Managing vehicle use.
- Discipline for abuse of tools/equipment.
- Direct coordinator to ensure all tools calibration and testing.
- Responsible for ensuring tools/equipment is returned after use is complete.
- Schedule specialty equipment for site use (cranes, etc..).
- Ensure specialty equipment is initiated and used safely.
Reporting and Tracking
- Review all daily reports from coordinators for accuracy.
- Review Procore daily for accuracy and completion.
- Be aware of daily production rates for all crews.
- Review quality documentation (coordinator/QA review daily; CM ultimately responsible for ensuring crews are completing paperwork).
- Review and approve POs for purchases made by CM.
- Work with PM to review monthly invoicing.
- Ensure 3rd party test results for all installations (with help from coordinator/quality).
- Review FLHA samples weekly (Safety provide docs for review).
- Review all incident reports with Safety and Directors of Construction. Others as needed.
- Review all NCR/SDR/RFI with Quality/Coordinators.
- Ultimately responsible for reporting accuracy from their crews.
- Review daily inspections (compiled but others). Review construction progress reports provided by the Construction Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience installing and supervising substations, BESS or similar.
- The CM will be experienced in the supervision and, ideally, the operation of all equipment and tools required to complete the installation.
- The CM will have a working knowledge of Earth, Civil, and Electrical works to be completed on the project.
- The CM will have experience managing personnel in excess of 20 men covering aspects such as safety, project planning, work planning, SJP/JHA/FLRA development, and HR (discipline).
- Ideally, the CM will have hands-on experience with all testing requirements for all work types.
- The CM will have experience and will be supported by project management in manpower forecasting, production tracking and reporting on projects of similar size and scope.
