Truly Good Foods has sales and distribution offices in Orlando, Atlanta, Washington DC, Reno, Dallas and Charlotte, NC. Our SQF, Kosher and organic production facility in Charlotte roasts nuts & seeds daily and blends over 60 bulk snack mixes. These facilities also package and re-box many of our items to meet our customers’ varied needs. Charlotte is our corporate headquarters, and is home to purchasing, accounting, and sales & marketing offices.

Job Summary
The Food Safety & Quality Assurance Director leads the efforts in ensuring the highest standards of food safety, quality, and compliance across our production and supply chain. This role will oversee the development and implementation of food safety programs, quality control procedures (GMP, SQF, FSMA, etc.), and regulatory compliance initiatives at local, state, and federal levels to guarantee that our products meet industry standards and exceed customer expectations. This role also oversees our sanitation program.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for managing all third party and FDA audit activities and maintaining compliance with audit results and requirements at manufacturing plant and operating centers (OCs).
- Formulates and maintains food safety objectives complementary to corporate policies and goals.
- Decides whether to accept a product or continue business with a vendor based on a review by the quality assurance staff.
- Responsible for food safety and SQF system at the manufacturing plant and GMP program at the operating centers (warehouse and distribution).
- Ensures that implementation of new regulations is quickly and accurately implemented at all OCs and suppliers.
- Creates, evaluates, and audits all food safety programs and policies as needed for full SQF certificates.
- Validates changes to the food safety fundamentals and food safety plans that have an impact on the supplier’s ability to deliver safe food.
- Supervises and provides support to the quality assurance and sanitation staff at the manufacturing facility.
- Responsible for overseeing the sanitation program and employees.
- Recruit, train, and lead a team of food safety and quality assurance professionals. Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement from line operators to top leadership.
- Manages PC/HACCP assessments and re-assessments, records, and file maintenance.
- Reviews all data obtained during all quality assurance activities to ensure consistency with company policies and procedures.
- Leads internal audits, conducts risk assessments, and coordinates third-party audits. Audits the manufacturing and OCs to ensure compliance with Federal, State and Company requirements and standards. Develop corrective action plans and ensure follow-though.
- Develops innovative approaches to solve problems identified during quality assurance activities.
- Keeps management team abreast of significant issues or developments identified during quality assurance activities and actions being taken to improve the situation.
- Develop and implement crisis management plans, including product recall protocols. Lead recall and traceability exercises as needed.
- Prepares and presents technical and program information to the management team.
- Maintains a working knowledge of government and industry quality assurance codes and standards.
- Designs and implements quality assurance training programs for key personnel in conjunction with managers.
- Supports and provides input for learning and development needs of manufacturing employees to establish robust food safety culture at the manufacturing facility.
- Investigates and adjusts customer complaints regarding food safety and quality.
- Works closely with the marketing department in control of labels and compliance.
- Ensures all labeling is in compliance with government requirements.
- Responsible for the department’s budgeting process and spending controls.

Scope of Responsibility
- This job will have periodic access to confidential data including financial statements, company records and/or minutes, and company plans, designs, and/or programs.
- Directly supervises supervisory and non-supervisory employees in the Quality Assurance and Sanitation Departments. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- This job develops plans and implements new procedures and methods to achieve company goals.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry of similar field of study from four-year college or university; and six to ten years related experience and/or training in microbiology, chemistry, or similar field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- HACCP certification and SQF Practitioner are required.
- PCQI – FSMA preferred.
- Experience using Micro-testing equipment preferred.
- Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to drive results in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven ability to lead projects, manage multiple priorities, and work cross-functionally with other departments.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
Physical Demands
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a comfortable office environment and disruptions occur frequently.
- The noise level in the warehouse/work environment is usually moderate.
Travel Required
- The employee may be required to travel up to 20% of the time.
