Job Summary:
The Director of Ray of Hope (ROH) leads departmental activities to achieve superior patient safety, evidence-based practice, and high levels of satisfaction among patients, families, employees, and providers. Responsibilities include monitoring patient care delivery, solving work-related issues, coaching staff, driving performance improvement, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Director manages fiscal planning, staffing, and departmental operations, aligns with budget and strategic goals, addresses educational needs, and participates in community activities. Effective communication with senior staff and maintaining strong relationships across the organization are essential. The role also involves recruiting and retaining talented employees and integrating healthcare trends to meet future needs.
About Ray of Hope Unit:
Ray of Hope (ROH) is a 10-bed voluntary short-stay inpatient unit for older adults
(65 years old and up) struggling with mental health concerns. Designed and staffed to treat the needs associated with aging in a caring and sensitive environment, this unit is a 'referral in' center for New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and beyond.
The Ray of Hope Unit was established to address gaps in mental health services for older adults who were experiencing mental health / neurological changes. Named in honor of long-time Executive Councilor Ray Burton, a dedicated advocate for mental health for older adults in New Hampshire, the unit is committed to helping patients regain their inner balance and improve their quality of life.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Direct and coordinate departmental activities to achieve superior patient safety, evidence-based practice, and high satisfaction among patients, families, employees, and providers
- Monitor patient care delivery, identify and solve work-related problems, and develop direct reporting staff
- Drive performance improvement and set measurements for process enhancement
- Oversee clinical product and service projects; ensure quality assurance and compliance with CMS, Cottage Hospital, and DPH regulations
- Review and analyze departmental activities, costs, and forecasts to ensure progress towards goals
- Develop strategic operational plans, manage staffing and fiscal planning, and ensure departmental functions are within budget
- Meet volume and revenue projections, identify differences in forecasts, and collaborate with Chief Nursing Officer and CFO on recommendations
- Manage departmental educational needs and review occurrence reports
- Participate in and promote departmental presence in community activities
- Ensure effective communication throughout the organization, including regular updates to senior staff and collaboration with providers
- Integrate healthcare trends to forecast and meet future departmental needs
- Recruit and retain talented employees, maintaining turnover rates in line with NH Hospital Association standards
Qualifications / Skills/ Experience:
- Director of psychiatric nursing services must be a registered nurse who has a master’s degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing or its equivalent from a school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing, or be qualified by education and experience in the care of the mentally ill
- Must be qualified to provide the leadership required for an intensive treatment program.
- Minimum of 2-3 years in which administrative and supervisory ability
has been demonstrated
- Current New Hampshire license as a registered nurse
- Strong knowledge of patient care standards and regulatory requirements (CMS, DPH)
- Ability to drive performance improvement and foster a positive work environment
