HCA is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to join our team as the Director of Medical Transport Operations for the MAMA (Mountain Area Medical Airlift/Ambulance) Programs. This role oversees one of the most advanced and trusted medical transport services in Western North Carolina, supporting Mission Health’s seven hospitals and extensive outpatient network, including Mission Hospital in Asheville—a premier tertiary hospital providing state-of-the-art care to the region.
The MAMA Programs deliver exceptional, compassionate care through a dedicated team of nearly 200 employees, including Communication Specialists, Patient Care Technicians, EMTs, AEMTs, Paramedics, and Registered Nurses. MAMA Air, our premier hospital-based helicopter service, completes approximately 1,200 flights annually with a fleet of one EC 145 and two EC 135 helicopters. MAMA Ground operates a diverse fleet of over 40 vehicles, completing more than 21,000 patient transports annually, covering cases from behavioral health to critical care.

Job Summary and Qualifications
- Serves as primary point of contact with RAVP of Medical Transportation in leading day to day operations; which may include strategic partnerships/affiliations, vendor management and enterprise contracting.
- Ultimately responsible for department hiring, training, and staff development. This development should include building and maintaining a culture of accountability for providing excellent service to all customers, including patients, employees and leadership.
- Analyzes all aspects of department processes for potential improvement opportunities. Relays these to RAVP of Medical Transportation. Through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, will design processes, systems, procedures, and operational changes to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and customer/patient satisfaction.
- Works with internal and external stakeholders to identify any issues or barriers to optimal patient care and growth. Works through these in alignment with leadership and in collaboration with the RAVP.
- Improves/maintains the delivery of quality service through effective environmental, qualitative and technical monitoring programs to build greater customer/patient satisfaction, loyalty and retention. Identifies trends and innovative measures that can be leveraged to drive results.
- Coordinates with RAVP and Medical Director(s) in establishing realistic but challenging expectations, measurable objectives and goals by designing and managing the structure and processes necessary for efficient operations, achievement of clinical performance and projected growth.
- In collaboration with the RAVP, develops and implements standards for general administrative/operations, policies and procedures, productivity/staffing and training that are in alignment with Corporate Medical Transportation direction.
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring operational and capital budgets related to the operation and identified strategic initiatives.
- Collaborates with division emergency preparedness and supports the RAVP of Medical Transportation for any needed patient evacuation efforts in the event of emergent circumstances across the division or Enterprise.
- Assures program adherence to all applicable regulatory bodies and organizational legal and compliance requirements across the team. To include program specific accreditation standards or requirements (as determined by the RAVP), and to include respective state EMS agencies, DEA, and all HCA Healthcare, Inc legal and compliance standards.
- Dependent upon program structure, this position will require coordination with Regional Medical Transport leadership to develop, negotiate, and monitor contracts associated with the service. This may include compliance for Medical Director contracts and associated timecards.
- Strategically resolves problems within internal processes to better address the needs of all customers
- Develops and recommends technological enhancements and/or replacements to support medical transportation operations.
- Provides recommendations on human resource policies that affect staff.
- Assists with the development of local strategic plans and new programs/services.
- Practice and adhere to the “Code of Conduct” philosophy and “Mission and Value Statement”
- Functions regularly as an Administrator on Call (AOC) for the program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of pre-hospital transport medicine and regulatory requirements.
- Must have a proven track record of success in creating and executing operational and clinical growth strategies.
- Participative management style and an ability to work in a matrix environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people, including but not limited to Corporate/Division leadership, hospital leadership, staff from information technology and clinical backgrounds, and external customers.
- Must be independent, driven, self-motivated, and passionate with an exceptional work ethic, executive presence, integrity and presentation skills, both oral and written.
- Demonstrated leadership competency in customer needs and expectations, human resource management, financial outcomes, strategic vision and execution, marketing initiatives, and continuous improvement skills.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products, including the use of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Ability to work well under pressure on concurrent, multidisciplinary projects.
- Solid level of strategic acumen, with strong analytical skills and ability to solve problems in a timely basis.
- Demonstrated competency in business finance, which may include budgeting and projections.
- Proven ability to manage, train and develop a team.
- Strong administrative, management and personnel organizational skills.
EDUCATION
- Graduate of an accredited undergraduate program required; Bachelor’s degree required.
- Master’s degree in healthcare or business-related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum five years of progressive management experience in medical transportation or related hospital operations.
- Must have held leadership positions (reflecting increasing levels of responsibility) in roles where building and leveraging key relationships was a responsibility as well as driving a strategic initiative.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE
- EMT-P or RN Licensure preferred; Must maintain licensure(s) throughout employment.
- Must be certified in BLS and maintain throughout employment.
