Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing officer, the Director of Nursing Medical Surgical assists with the planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluation of nursing service and education program of the hospital, diagnostic and treatment center or a major unit within the Department of Nursing. Performs related work.
- Responsible for overall quality operations (24/7 accountability) of a Medial Surgical/Telemetry/Step down unit including clinical supervision, staff retention and recruitment, fiscal budget, cost containment, position control, and outcomes measurement of clinical indicators.
- Manages staff, interviews, hires and trains, evaluates employee performance, deals with performance problems as appropriate, delegates work assignments effectively.
- Promotes an optimum environment in which the patient care team can accomplish mutually developed goals.
- Ensures the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for staff. May provide education planning, documentation, and record keeping for assigned units.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. A Masters Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
Department Preferences
- BLS AHA, ACLS
- 5 Plus years of clinical experience in Telemetry / Medical Surgical Nursing
- ANCC Board Certification specialty area preferred
- Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, organization, presentation skills
- Great interpersonal skills
- Highly organized, ability to work independently
