Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

Duties & Responsibilities
Under direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, with the broadest scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, organizes, directs, coordinates and evaluates the nursing service and nursing education programs of a health care setting or diagnostic and treatment center; performs related tasks.
Summary Of Duties And Responsibilities:
- Develops, establishes and implements the philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of the Nursing Department.
- Organizes the Nursing Department to delineate authority, functional responsibilities and lines of communication. Coordinates functions of nursing services with other disciplines, collaborates with administrative staff, other department staff and representatives of allied groups in planning services.
- Determines staffing requirements in relation to patient care standards and develops procedures to maintain an adequate, competent nursing staff.
- Maintains a system of continuing evaluation of nursing service provided for patients.
- Maintains up-to-date policy procedure manuals for all nursing units and evaluates their effectiveness.
- Establishes an effective system of clinical and administrative nursing records and reports.
- Directs the preparation of the personnel, equipment and supply budgets for the Nursing Department.
- Directs the development and implementation of orientation, training and continuing education programs for nursing personnel.
- Initiates and participates in studies and research projects. Utilizes findings to improve patient care and administrative services.
- Plans for and coordinates use of clinical facilities by colleges and other agencies for nursing education purposes.
- Participates in the development of policies and health programs for the health care setting and System policies and programs involving nursing.
- Develops and maintains sound relationships with the community, labor and professional groups in developing nursing programs and policies.
Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse; and
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing Administration or a related field and four (4) years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three (3) years of which must have been in a hospital; or
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
