Job Description
The Director of Peer Jacks Mentoring leads a dynamic team that is
committed to access and success for students at Northern Arizona
University (NAU). Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student
Affairs for Inclusive Student Mentoring and Success, the Director has
overall responsibility for the activities, programs, and operations of
the Peer Jacks Mentoring Program at NAU. The work of the Peer Jacks
Mentoring Program is informed by NAU's mission of access and
designations as a Hispanic Serving Institution and First Gen Forward
Champion Campus.
Peer Jacks Mentoring serves first-time freshmen, transfer students, and
statewide learners through intentional activities that support student
engagement, persistence and success. Peer mentors are advocates and
guides to students as they make connections, build community, and
smoothly transition to the university through mentoring, participating
in social/academic activities, and cultivating a sense of belonging.
The Director of Peer Jacks Mentoring must be a collaborative leader,
responsible for directing the staff in the development and delivery of
programs and services designed specifically to achieve persistence and
graduation rates equal to or above the overall university average for
students served by the program in their first year.
Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.
Leadership and Strategic Planning - 40%
- Establishes, in consultation with supervisor and staff, the overall
department vision, goals, objectives, and plans consistent with the
mission of the division and the university.
- Leads overall program development and assessment and organizes
resources to achieve goals.
- Leads the team in and contributes to the collection of
research-based approaches for peer mentoring and retention success
in high education.
- Provides formative and summative evaluation of departmental and
programmatic effectiveness.
- Provides oversight for program operations to ensure program goals
and objectives are accomplished in accordance with priorities, as
well as time and funding limitations.
- Contributes as a strategic member of the Student Affairs division.
- Establish and maintain department policies, procedures, and
standards of service.
- Represents the department on various division and university
committees.
- Participates in retention initiatives and program planning teams.
Supervision - 30%
- Directs the overall recruitment, selection, training, supervision,
and evaluation of an Assistant Director, two Program Managers, two
Coordinators, two Graduate Assistants and over 50 peer mentors.
- Ensure staff effectiveness in accompl shing departmental goals and
objectives.
- Cultivate a positive working team environment.
- Ensure compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures.
- Facilitate staff professional development through intentional
training opportunities and campus engagement.
- Provide direction and leadership on the continual improvement of
student employee training and curriculum.
Programming and Strategic Partnerships - 15%
- Partner with all other Student Affairs Mentoring programs to support
more integrated efforts.
- Represents the department on various division and university
committees, advocating for policies and services that meet student
needs.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with stakeholders
across the university.
Program Assessment and Fiduciary Responsibility - 10%
Provides reports and recommendations on the activities of the
department. Compiles reports for presentations to campus and other
stakeholders.
Manage the outcomes assessment and documentation of Peer Jacks Mentoring
initiatives.
Prepares, monitors, and maintains oversight of department budgets.
Provides financial and statistical reports, projections, and
recommendations as needed.
Ensure departmental compliance with university fiscal policies and
procedures.
