The Position
The Public Information & Engagement (PIE) Director serves an executive role in West Chester Township government. The PIE Director is the chief spokesperson for the Township and is responsible for ensuring that all messaging – both internal and external – aligns with the organizational mission, vision, and core values. The position requires situational and community awareness to position messaging on behalf of all township disciplines including administration, finance, community development, community services and public safety.
The PIE Director manages a team of creative content architects and event coordinators utilizing a wide range of tools, strategies, and resources to further goals of transparency and community building; and works closely with leadership from all Township departments.
The PIE Director prepares and monitors the department budget and provides management oversight for all functional areas within the Department, including these key essential duties and responsibilities:
Public Relations/Communication:
- Ensures internal and external messaging is consistent with township brand, mission, vision, and core values
- Acts as chief media liaison on all topics related to the township, including public safety, and maintains a positive working relationship with regional media outlets
- Generates public interest in the township’s initiatives, events, community outreach efforts, community building and initiatives
- Manages content creation efforts including written, verbal and audio/visual for all platforms
- Oversees township-sponsored and township-supported events
- Works closely with regional peers on shared initiatives and communication
Supervisory/Leadership
- Manages all aspects of department personnel including professional development, training, mentoring, performance, coaching and counseling, hiring and termination
- Develops and manages annual budget and plans for future financial needs
Operational
- Supports township departments in developing internal and external communications
- Supports township administration with regard to public-facing technology
- Makes sound decisions regarding use of resources for long-term planning
- Oversees the operation of township rental facilities and coordinates township events
- Collects data and prepares analysis regarding communication efforts
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for West Chester’s next Public Information & Engagement Director will be a dynamic, progressive, and experienced professional with exceptional communication skills. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker and an effective communicator, at ease articulating difficult topics and interacting with all levels of the organization and the public.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in journalism, public administration, marketing/PR, or other related discipline, and three (3) or more years’ experience in a related field.
Advance education, management certifications, or extensive experience in the field may be substituted for education and/or experience.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Prior experience in a township, municipal, or government setting
- Knowledge of community engagement and outreach methods to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, business owners, community organizations, and government officials
The terms of employment and starting salary are negotiable, with an excellent benefit package. The expected hiring range is $94,765.00 to $110,000.00, depending on qualifications; the maximum salary for the position is $140,079.
