We are currently looking for an experienced Director to lead our Transportation department in NYC
Position Summary:
The Transportation Director is responsible for the oversight of daily operations, compliance, assessment, training and development of commercial drivers for Baldor Express. This role maintains and administers Company Contracts with clients & vendors and proactive Safety program to ensure compliance with State, Federal and DOT mandates and reduce accident and injuries within the operation of our commercial fleet. The Transportation Director heightens safety awareness within the department, maintains employee morale, and executes continuous improvement efforts.
Approving payroll, evaluating the skills of the team, executing a safety agenda, right sizing the fleet, in-taking new talent and maintaining the DQ files are also within the scope of responsibility of the Transportation Director.
Essential Job Functions:
- Oversees DOT compliance and reporting as it relates to the fleet and drivers
- Ensures the successful delivery of Baldor’s goods and services to Client Routes in NYC, CT, LI, NJ, PA, FL and Upstate NY
- In charge of the Fleet Operations and compliance of DC and Boston
- Manages 4 transportation managers, a fleet safety manager, the fleet team, routing team, dispatching team and a team of administrators
- Official ambassador of safety, customer service, driver morale and the efficiency for the Baldor transportation team
- Implements vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance programs and ensures that all equipment across the country is being maintained properly t and are in full compliance
- Develops and maintains outside vendor and service provider relationships
- Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
- Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals
- Travels to remote branches for safety inspections and compliance
- Responsible for all truck leases/maintenance and repairs
- Creates and update driver policy to conform to DOT regulation
- Ensure that all drivers meet DOT regulation
- Ensure that the department maintains all policies and procedures as it relates to the company
- Oversees the employee relations and personnel administration of 300+ commercial drivers
- Approves new applicants & ensures that all new drivers receives new driver orientation training, develops current drivers
- Conducts new driver road tests to ensure DOT compliance and safe vehicle operation
- Evaluates the driver's skill level and make recommendations for safe operations and driver development
- Coordinates driver road tests and random drug tests existing drivers
- Performs skill assessments and diagnose safety issues with drivers
- Provides continuing education, training, and evaluation of drivers and dispatchers
- Provides training on defensive driving
- Process accident reports and insurance claims
- Helps implement new DOT mandates, as needed
- Reports Safety Metrics and track accident trends
- Performs routine safety audits of drivers through ride-a-longs, driver logs, and vehicle inspections
- Assists in Transportation operational duties and transactions, when needed
- Must be a talented leader with attention to detail and a vision for the future of the operation
Working conditions
- Responsibilities require working some evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice
Physical requirements
- Ability to perform tasks in and around commercial motor vehicles and in an office setting
- Must be able to work in a cool environment
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to Climb, jump, walk up/down stairs
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Business or Logistics or Supply Chain
- 7 years related experience in Transportation Management, Logistics and Distribution
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- GPS Tracking and transportation systems experience
- Must be fluent with DOT regulations, interstate laws, driver hour requirements, IFTA and HUD tax regulations
- Must have food distribution & warehousing experience (perishable goods, preferred)
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid CDL Class B License
- Experience with DOT statutes
