This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an Early Career Restoration Ecologist to support our San Diego, CA office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
In this role you will take part in providing local technical assistance for the collection, identification, and compiling of observational and spatial data concerning a variety of biological, physical, and earth sciences. Provides local assistance for the development of processes and infrastructure relating to water supply, air emission, pollution control, cultural impact, and preserving the quality of the environment by identifying, controlling, and preventing disruption to environmental systems and species caused by human activity. Generates accurate and concise documentation, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact
+ Assist with site preparation, including earthwork such as shoveling, raking, and installation of erosion control devices.
+ Assist in the installation and removal of temporary irrigation systems.
+ Facilitate landscaping by hand planting container plants, distributing seed, and providing weed control.
+ Use hand and power tools for weeding and restoration work tasks.
+ Operate weeding equipment (weed whippers, etc.).
+ Pesticide application.
+ Loading and unloading of restoration materials.
+ Possess the knowledge or be willing to learn to identify native plants and invasive weeds.
+ Follow instruction from supervisors to perform manual labor tasks.
+ Under general supervision, conduct natural resource field surveys collecting observational, spatial, and environmental data.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field.
+ 0 to 1 years of relevant experience with landscaping, manual labor, power tool use, and medium to heavy equipment use.
+ Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
+ Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
+ Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools, including experience with Microsoft Office products and applications.
+ Ability to uphold workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
+ Must have a current valid driver’s license.
+ Must be legally able to work in the United States.
+ Ability to obtain access credentials to federal military installations (i.e., no disqualifying record)
+ Must be able to pass a physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator / Fit for Duty Exam / Medical Exam.
+ Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (stoop, stand, bend, and walk for long periods of time, lift heavy loads of up to 40 pounds consistently, etc.) and work on uneven and/or difficult terrain in various weather conditions.
+ Ability or willingness to learn to recognize common non-native invasive plant species (weeds) and distinguish them from native plants.
+ Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek (some Saturdays included), in varied weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Familiarity with power tools and machinery is desired, but not required.
+ Possession of a Qualified Applicators License or Certificate is highly desired.
+ A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation:
Expected Salary: $49,400-$74,100
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
