Job Summary:
The EKG technical is accountable to and under the direct supervision of the Respiratory Supervisor and department director. Understand they are solely accountable for the completions of orders/tasks on their shift and the prompt review and assignment of work awaiting them on their shift. Satisfactory completion of on the job training after hire is required.
EKG Technician must demonstrate competency for the knowledge, skill and ability for:
- Provision of appropriate age/growth/cognitive development during care:
- selection and application of appropriate size supply/equipment and parameter adjustments
- patient education and includes family or significant other when necessary to facilitate understanding required for patient cooperation during the procedure.
- Sensitivity to cultural and religious beliefs of patients, visitors and staff.
- Adherence to all policy for infection prevention, surveillance, and control and consistent use of proper hand hygiene/standard precaution practice compliant with guidelines and safe use of PPE.
- Adherence to all safe work practices to maintain a safe work and patient environment, such as operation of office equipment/telephone systems, panic button, and pneumatic tube system, operation of hospital beds, computers and testing equipment hardware used in acquiring an electrocardiograph.
- Adherence to all work policy and demonstrate ability to work independently with minimal supervision in the completion of routine assigned tasks and department overall daily/shift objectives.
- Intuitive practice of guidelines for:
- patient identification/ staff identification,
- practice of safe secure / clean work environment of care,
- use of MUSE work lists for collection of all scheduled/completed work orders
- use of logs and software systems for the archival and retrieval of the digital and downtime paper results in compliance with the department work flow
- use of software systems/interfaces in order to recognize, resolve or report variances from normal expected workflow and to satisfy performance improvement (PI) goals.
- Acquisition of EKG in accordance with physician order, using correct or appropriately modified anatomical electrode placement and machine operation and assessment of an electrocardiogram recording for quality results useful in the diagnosis and care plan of the patient.
- Compliance related to :
- billing, and quality monitoring of results received into MUSE
- HIPPA/EPIC/MUSE management of patient information
- your personal health information
- Working independently with minimal supervision in the completion of daily tasks and objectives such as maintaining electrocardiograph machines, work area and software systems in clean, orderly and functional condition and to work with healthcare team to meet customer needs.
- Receipt of or provision of verbal/ written shift report.
- Other duties as assigned.
Performance Expectations:
EKG Technician must:
- Provide effective preceptorship of new hire EKG training.
- Be flexible to adjustments of assist call, scheduled times/shifts/rotations in order to meet patient care needs and departmental daily objectives and to maintain a safe working environment.
- Be accessible through telephone number provided and follow guidelines for assist call shift(s) and staffing during internal and external disasters.
- Active participation in:
- department PI goals and demonstrate personal improvement after remediation,
- department meetings and education/training, and meet the established deadlines for completion.
- Work as team in department to answer phones, put up stock, and maintain dept. environments clean and safe.
- Train for alternate work assignment such as RT desk coverage or EPIC EKG superviser as requested to meet safe work environment.
- Demonstrate practice of all established patient safety and infection control intervention.
- Complete and maintain required BLS credential and all assigned education/training prior to deadline.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
High school graduate or equivalent required; courses in computer/library science, biological sciences, and allied health preferred. BLS training course required.
Work Experience:
Six months experience as EKG technician preferred; previous patient care experience preferred.
Additional Certification/Licensure - Obtained based on required timeframe below

Mental Demands:
Ability to perform repetitive tasks, demonstrate initiative, good understanding of normal EKG recording, machine malfunction or interference, and alertness to detect evidence of irregularities in electrocardiogram. Have "sincere interest" in being capable, dependable, and reliable, flexible and thoughtful and responsive at all levels of engagement with health team and patient customers. Work with the realization error in judgment or performance may have serious consequence to patients.
