Electrical Engineer - Argonne National Laboratory
Lemont, IL
About the Job
Argonne National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented researchers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity. The Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) division is supporting the transition to a decarbonized economy by developing sustainable transportation and power solutions through ground-breaking experimental and analytical activities. We demonstrate and deploy creative strategies to decarbonize energy systems with world-class expertise and one-of-a-kind user facilities.
Due to expanded production of electric vehicles across vehicle sectors, there is a greater need for interoperability and charging technology development for a spectrum of vehicle types and use cases. These range from on-road light-medium-heavy-duty vehicles to other off-road applications in mining, marine, rail, aviation, construction, agriculture and material handling. Charging can be at workplaces, multi-vehicle charging stations, urban charging hubs, inter-urban and depot/port settings.
This new position will be a part of the Advanced Mobility and Grid Integration Technology (AMAGIT) department. The AMAGIT department is part of Argonne's Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) division. The new hire will be working at Argonne’s Smart Energy Plaza, home to the laboratory’s EV Smart-Grid Interoperability Center, which is a purpose-built facility for research on the integration and management of EV charging, renewables, building systems, and energy storage.
The RD2 systems researcher engineer position will be responsible for aiding project managers and lead researcher on projects related to evaluation and validation of EV charging system equipment and related software. This position involves investigating and developing solutions that lead to creating better standards through validation and iteration of charging system state-of-the-art. ANL is engaged in a broad subject matter spectrum on vehicle charging standards from kilowatt to megawatt levels including weights and measures aspects, energy services markets, communication, controls and safety certification requirements. The ideal candidate is expected to assist in gathering data from charging systems both on the vehicle and infrastructure ends of the process. The applicant is expected to interface with ANL contractors on the creation of Statements of Work (SOWs) and assist in monitoring of progress toward successful, timely deliverables. The work centers on creation of test fixtures and procedures to collect data with the majority of activity tied to generating documents used in creating and refining standards or materials for meeting presentations. The position will have significant responsibilities in providing support for standards meetings, document preparation and collating collected information. Generating and revising draft standards presentation materials for standards meetings and DOE progress reports are a central job responsibility along with assisting ANL/DOE public relations teams on refining informational updates on the state of standards for EV charging.
