Overview
Applying an expert level of skill, the Electrical, Instrumentation/Controls Technician installs, troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, modifies, overhauls, diagnoses, tests and maintains all power plant and auxiliary equipment, to include power distribution systems, pumps, motors, programmable logic controllers (PLC) and the Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Provides environmental and safety stewardship. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal and State regulations and plant procedures. Maintains all equipment in optimum operating condition. Develops procedures for plant and equipment monitoring systems to ensure consistent and environmentally compliant operations.
Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Responsible for troubleshooting all field instrumentation and control systems equipment failures.
- Provides services including but are not limited to problem resolution, calibration and tuning of field instrumentation and control systems.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates and maintains all electrical pumps, motors, relays and I/C equipment as required to support plant operations and optimize equipment value.
- Uses computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to maintain and control work order system and spare parts inventory.
- Trains and develops lesser qualified employees in performing preventive maintenance and routine equipment service activities.
- Practices environmental and safety stewardship.
- Assists in equipment or system problem identification and recommends solutions.
- As needed, develops maintenance procedures for electrical and I/C equipment to ensure consistent and safe operation.
- Adherence to all Safety, Environmental and Plant procedures.
- Assists in requisitioning parts and supplies.
- Performs other duties, including non-core responsibilities as directed.
- Regular and reliable attendance required.
Other Duties/Responsibilities:
- Participates in regular safety meetings.
- Performs housekeeping activities as required.

Qualification Requirements:

Education/Experience:
- Two years related electrical and I&C work experience required.
- A two-year technical degree in Electrical / Technology may be considered in lieu of experience only.
- Power plant or experience working in a heavy industrial or continuous process environment required.
- Technical training / certificates in an Electrical / Technology Industrial field or equivalent preferred.
- Candidate must pass the applicable EEI TECH test to be considered.
- High School diploma or GED required.
Certification/Licensure: N/A
Knowledge of:
- Power plant electrical, instrumentation and controls equipment, systems, and drawings.
- Emerson Ovation, Foxboro, or ABB.
- DCS field in areas such as configuration, HMI graphic development and troubleshooting.
- 13,800V, 4,160V, and 480V electrical generation, distribution and motor controls.
- Safe maintenance procedures / practices.
- Safety, health and environmental hazards associated with the production of electricity.
- Steam power plant operations and maintenance including mechanical maintenance, instrument and electrical systems, and a working knowledge of the steam cycle and auxiliary systems.
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Skills, abilities and physical requirements:
- Willingness and ability to work overtime or on alternate shifts during planned or unscheduled outages.
- Ability to work alternating shifts following operational crews and provide technical assistance for 3-month blocks.
- Ability to clearly communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and others.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, wiring diagrams, and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Physical Requirements:
- Work in close quarters.
- Work from elevated positions; walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off of equipment.
- Must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift.
- Don and wear required safety equipment including respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.

Compensation and Benefits:
At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is between $37.40 per hour and $47.40 per hour. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. In addition, this position is eligible to participate in the Company’s monthly incentive program.

Prairie State offers all full-time employees paid time off, accruing 160 hours annually with gradual increases based on length of service, as well as nine paid holidays per year. Paid maternal and paternal leave is also available to employees that meet the eligibility requirements.
