Position Summary:
The instructor will facilitate student learning to achieve program and course objectives. The instructor will organize all aspects of the learning environment to include delivery of material, cleanliness, safety, and effective lab/lecture. The instructor will deliver the approved curriculum for the program.
Responsibilities:
- Motivate students by demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, sensitivity for their concerns. Actively involve them in classroom discussions and/or activities. Identify different student learning styles and adjust accordingly.
- Create and maintain a safe environment at all times.
- Manage tools assigned to the classroom, lab, and LMS/Canvas environment.
- Integrate features of LMS/Canvas into the learning environment, to include announcements, threaded discussions, quizzes/exams, videos, communication inbox and gradebook.
- Post a minimum of one announcement weekly in LMS/Canvas, include motivational quotes, tips, etc.
- Post videos/ tutorials as necessary in LMS/Canvas to increase student engagement and understanding of the material.
- Provide qualitative, holistic feedback to support the assigned grade. Feedback should be based on the rubric and scope of content deliverables and provide students with takeaways to improve on future assignments.
- Respond to all initial threaded discussion posts in LMS/Canvas within 24-36 hours.
- Extend discussions, either in classroom or LMS/Canvas, with follow-up questions or additional content that promotes critical thinking.
- Conduct minimum live online virtual session weekly for didactic portion (synchronous) , more often as directed by campus administration
- Respond to all student emails/communications within 24-36 hours.
- Check course Q and A in LMS/Canvas and respond to all posts within 24-36 hours of post.
- Identify struggling students - Review grade book to identify trends in students’ not logging in or attending regularly, declining grades, decline or absent LMS/Canvas discussion posts (quality and quantity). Reach out to these potentially struggling students and offer assistance and advise accordingly (use approved academic advising forms).
- Contact any student at least weekly that did not attend their scheduled course (s).
- Communicate, support and enforce school policies and procedures; advise students accordingly on attendance, grades and discipline issues as necessary (use approved academic advising forms).
- Complete mid-module assessment form for each student (use approved academic advising forms).
- Ensure an ethical and fair testing environment during periods of testing.
- Constantly evaluates curriculum to ensure relevance and provide feedback, when necessary, on approved curriculum feedback form.
- Maintain a working field knowledge through continuing education and demonstrates continuing professional development of technical expertise and as an instructor that meets company guidelines.
- Mandatory attendance at semi-annual graduation and mandatory faculty meetings.
- Maintain accurate and timely record keeping as it applies to student grades and attendance.
- Complete final grades as directed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES include the following:
- Special student assistance: Be available to help students needing tutoring. Consult with Lead Instructor/Director of Training or Director of Education in cases in which it is identified that a student needs more extensive tutoring attention. Keep communication with at risk students and update Director of Training and/or Director of Education accordingly.
- Student Issues: Work with students to resolve any concerns they may have, or when necessary, make appropriate referrals for resources, follow up accordingly with any persistence challenges and keep Director of Training and Director of Education updated accordingly.
- Safety Program: Assist Lead Instructor/Director of Training/Education in development and implementation of safety program. Monitor safety program in classroom and laboratory areas. Remind students of safety requirements and request that it be followed. Report to Lead Instructor/Director of Training/Education about any repeated infractions of safety requirements.
- Time commitment: May require work on evenings and weekends in order to meet business needs.
- Curriculum development: Assist with curriculum development as necessary, including topic research, text material acquisition, lesson plan development, test writing, curriculum calls, etc.
- Personnel issues: Refer all personnel issues to the Lead Instructor/Director of Training or Director of Education, such as requests for vacation, changes in scheduling, questions about salary and benefits, etc.
Required Knowledge, Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 7 years of practical field experience within the past 10 years. Additionally, a minimum of a current industry-recognized certification, and/or a diploma/degree consisting of a minimum of 15 SCH (or equivalent) of postsecondary education in the field to be taught. Combination of experience and education may be acceptable and will be reviewed by Director of Training, Director of Education, or VP of Education
- Must have been a Journeyman lineman for at least 7 years; Lead instructor have 10 years or more experience.
- Must possess proof of completion of a lineman apprenticeship program recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training Department
- Must have a CDL class A (unrestricted if vehicles are manual)
- Must possess up to date First Aid/CPR/AED certifications
- Must be pole top rescue qualified
- Must be able to operate power tools
- Must be able to Operate a digger Derrick truck to set poles, drill anchors, load transformers, secure loads, pull a pole trailer
- Must have ability to read standards and prints
- Successfully pass DOT physicals and drug testing
- Must pass a background check and a medical screening
Physical Environment:
- Incumbent may stand for long periods of time
- Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone and other office equipment
- Stooping, bending twisting, and reaching may be required
- Some work may be completed in classroom or shop environment
- Wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock
- Incumbent is sometimes required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work in all weather conditions in dirty conditions
