The Opportunity
This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Abbott Diabetes Care Division, where we are focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.
The Embedded Software Engineer will contribute to the design and development of software across one or more domains: embedded under a disciplined product development process that meets FDA requirements. This person will work on software design, coding, and validating software, supporting verification and validation testing, and ensuring that all product development conforms to design specifications and coding standards for medical devices. They will also exercise judgment in coding following the software designs and conducting investigation activities following defined methods. #software
What you’ll work on
- Design and implement software in current programming languages (e.g. C, C++, C#, python), practical experience with embedded C development.
- Supports implementation, enhancements, and modifications to test cases, procedures, scripts, and code.
- Identifies parameters, structure, and critical test components. Writes, updates, or executes test design, cases, as well as procedures and reports results.
- Debugs, troubleshoots, and isolates software problems.
- Assist in the preparation of software design requirements and detailed design specifications for implementation of software designs per Abbott design development process.
- Assist in the evaluation of selected designs through testing and full documentation of the results.
- Work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
- Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Contributes to and supports gathering, analyzing, and validating requirements;
- Contributes to and supports writing, updating, developing and maintaining Hazard/Risk analysis specifications;
- Contributes to and supports root-cause analysis of failures
- Participate in software development, verification and validation following the guidance of software lead.
- Follow approved Design Control procedures for software development in accordance with FDA guidelines.
- Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
- Interacts with QA engineers to ensure that software products are robust and of very high quality.
- At this level, it is expected the candidate will have proficiency in software implementation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree with 6-8 years of related experience or Master's Degree with 4+ years of related experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Programming experience using current programming languages (e.g., C, C++, C#, Python etc.)
- Strong familiarity with current development tools (IDEs, debuggers, unit test frameworks and source control management).
- Experience with software testing.
- Experience with software development life cycle processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the principles of quality software engineering as described by software lifecycle development processes that are consistent with ISO, IEEE, or other FDA recognized standards.
- Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device development.

The base pay for this position is $83,600.00 – $167,200.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
