This is skilled and supervisory work over emergency communications operators engaged in handling emergency 911 calls on a shift. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Communications Manager. Supervision is exercised over a large number of emergency communications operators in the emergency communications center.

- Plans, organizes, schedules, assigns and evaluates the work of emergency communications operators; provides counseling as needed.
- Assures that proper procedures are followed.
- Provides on-the-job training and classroom instruction to operators on handling emergency calls; trains employees on procedures and equipment operation.
- Checks and maintains equipment operation in the Communication Unit; provides minor maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
- Prepares and maintains records for weekly and monthly reports; prepares reports; prepares time records for payroll purposes.
- Operates computer-aided dispatch and related equipment; responds to 911 overflow and other lines as needed.
- Oversees the overall communications training operations program.
- Develops new employee orientation materials.
- Participates in the disciplinary process.
- Develops procedures for the unit.
- Responsible for maintaining the equipment operations. Handles the vendor service contracts and addresses problems related to either the equipment or with the contractor.
- Oversees and participates in the upkeep, configuration, and utilization of public safety Geographic Information System (GIS) software applications
- Creates reports as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
