About the Job
This position answers emergency telephones, dispatches ambulances, and takes control of an emergency scene until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrive. Completes billing forms, maintains computer logs, arranges air flights, and coordinates fire and police assistance and advanced life support intercepts.
Responsibilities:(40%)* Receives incoming emergency ambulance requests. Dispatches ambulances to emergency and non-emergency situations.
(30%)* Determines the need for police and/or fire-rescue assistance and contacts the appropriate law enforcement agency.
(30%)* Maintains daily computer logs for both Gladwin and Midland EMS. Maintains daily computer statistics for Gladwin and Midland.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Completes all billing forms using proper codes and obtaining any additional information needed.
Receives and schedules non-emergency transfers. Maintains adequate coverage for both Midland and Gladwin departments by shifting vehicles.
Determines and coordinates Advanced Life Support (ALS) and helicopter intercepts.
Takes control of scene via telephone giving pre-arrival emergency medical directions to family, patient, or bystanders.

Certifications and Licensures:Credential:BLS: Basic Life Support
Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer
Qualification Source: AHA
Required Education:Education: HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
Equivalent Experience: One year field experience is preferred. 911 Dispatch course offered by the county will be required within 90-days of hire or transfer to the position.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Require knowledge of basic life support and emergency medicine as normally acquired through completion of Basic EMT program and licensing and prefer 1 year field experience is preferred.
Completion of training program within departmental orientation to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
Ability to work independently to produce desired results.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Geographical skills needed to read maps and to take and give directions.
Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done annually. Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
