Job Summary
This position is responsible for both special and routine patient care procedures and assists in the nursing care of critically ill and stable patients in the Emergency Department. Assists nursing staff and provides basic patient care which includes but not limited to IV starts and removals, phlebotomy, splint application, foley catheter insertion, assisting provider as needed, transports and prepares patients for exam, and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- A minimum of six months experience as a Medical Assistant (MA), Phlebotomist or equivalent (e.g. military training) or completion of at least sophomore year of RN nursing clinical education or maintain valid Indiana Licensed Practical Nursing license.
- Successful completion of the MGH I.V. start and phlebotomy training and all required clinical/practical experience within 45days of hire.
- CPR certification or must obtain at next available class upon hire.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Two years of experience.

- Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
- Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
- Developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, echarting, email and other standard applications related to the department operations and job function.
- Customer service skills, with special emphasis on patient centered care. Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, Hospital Administrators, providers, consultants, business associates and regulatory agencies presenting a professional image as a representative of Marion General Hospital.
- Seeks consultation/collaboration for complex issues or when unsure, utilizing resources that are available.
- Ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment.
- Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment

- Basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self and others.

Working Conditions
- Typical hospital clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
- Work may be subject to interruptions.
- Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious, electrical and radiation hazards.
- Works with protected health information.
- Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
- Exposure to potentially violent situations.
Physical and Mental Activities, Tools and Equipment
- Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.

- Uses patient care tools and equipment as they relate to area of clinical specialty.
