Schedule - PT Weekends Saturday and Sunday: 10a-10p shift or 12p-12a shift
As an Emergency Veterinary Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care and support to animals in critical situations. Your strong communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure will be essential in assisting our veterinary professionals during emergency cases.
Responsibilities:
- Provide essential support to the emergency veterinary team by assisting with patient intake, assessments, and treatments.
- Assist in restraining and handling animals, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout their time in the hospital.
- Prepare examination rooms and treatment areas, ensuring they are well-stocked and organized for efficient patient care.
- Administer medications, treatments, and basic medical procedures under the supervision of licensed veterinary professionals.
- Monitor vital signs, patient status, and response to treatments, promptly reporting any changes or concerns to the veterinary team.
- Perform basic laboratory tests, such as blood draws, urine collection, and diagnostic imaging, as directed by veterinarians.
- Assist with emergency surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile environment and providing surgical support as needed.
- Comfort and communicate with distraught pet owners, offering emotional support and relaying information regarding their pets' condition and treatment plans.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, treatment charts, and documentation in accordance with hospital protocols.
- Keep the hospital and equipment clean and sanitized to ensure a safe and hygienic environment.
- Collaborate with other veterinary staff members to ensure seamless patient care and efficient workflow in a fast-paced emergency setting.
- Continuously participate in professional development and training opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Veterinary Assistant certification is a plus.
- Prior experience as a Veterinary Assistant, especially in an emergency or critical care setting, is highly desirable.
- Passion for animal care, welfare, and a genuine empathy for animals and their owners.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with both clients and team members.
- Ability to remain calm, composed, and make sound decisions under pressure and in emotionally charged situations.
- Basic understanding of veterinary medical terminology, procedures, and practices.
- Proficiency in handling and restraining animals of various sizes and temperaments.
- Familiarity with basic veterinary equipment and diagnostic tools.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate record-keeping and patient monitoring.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as emergency veterinary care operates around the clock.
- Physical stamina to lift and move animals of varying sizes and to perform repetitive tasks.
- Commitment to maintaining a positive and cooperative attitude within a team environment.
