At Houston Methodist, the Endoscopy Technician I (Endo Tech) position, under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or physician, provides support to the gastroenterology (GI) providers and other members of the healthcare team and is directly involved in patient care before, during and after procedures. This position assists with gastroenterology (GI) endoscopy procedures related to preparation for and assisting with room turnaround activities for procedures, which include cleaning and processing of endoscopes and accessory equipment. The Endo Tech I position is familiar with all endoscopy supplies and other related equipment ensuring that items are ready, available and in good working conditions at all times. Other duties for this position will include department upkeep, as delegated by licensed personnel.
- Collaborates with all members of the interprofessional care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data in a comprehensive manner. Communication to promote both work efforts and problem resolution is clear and professional.
- Contributes to a positive work environment with the interprofessional care team to achieve optimal department results. Participates in teamwork by responding positively to requests for assistance. Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment. Makes contributions to the work effort as a whole.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Prepares room, equipment and supplies to accommodate planned procedures.
- Supports the physician with diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopy procedures, pertinent observations, and anticipates the next steps and possible complications of those procedures.
- Maintains an orderly work environment that facilitates access to supplies, manuals and other resource information by restocking and cleaning rooms. Independently performs assigned cleaning tasks and documents on checklists.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Utilizes proper use, handling, cleaning, and high-level disinfecting techniques of endoscopes, equipment and accessories. Assists in cleaning room for turnover as needed.
- Prepares for the procedure by organizing the work flow, problem-solving, and managing multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision.
- Promotes quality patient care by handling specimens appropriately and entering patient data accurately.
- Supports and upholds established hospital and department policies, procedures, and standards. Reports observed variances in practices to department management.
- Contributes towards meeting quality and safety targets on the unit-based scorecard, through peer-to-peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the interprofessional team.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Assists team members in maintaining inventories. Monitors supplies to maintain par level.
- Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime. Utilizes time between heavy workloads efficiently and helps other team members.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identifies and assumes responsibility of own learning needs, consults with healthcare team experts and seeks continuing education opportunities to meet those needs. Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond novice competencies with a focus on continual development.
- Participates in department projects and shared governance activities.

- High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
WORK EXPERIENCE
- One (1) year of patient care experience in a healthcare setting
- Previous endoscopy or direct patient care experience preferred
- BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
- Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
- Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
- Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems to include electronic health record and Microsoft Office software to maintain patient and exam document
- Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of the healthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers
- Organizational and problem solving skills as evidenced by capacity to prioritize multiple tasks and role components
- Demonstrates time management skills
- Ability to progress towards independence and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team and patients and their families
- Demonstrates progressive knowledge and appropriate use of procedure databases such as electronic health record, serving as a resource to physicians, patients, visitors and staff as appropriate
