Job Summary
Dominion Energy South Carolina Substation Operations Department is responsible for activities and processes needed for the successful construction and maintenance of electrical substations in South Carolina. There is one position available and will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Charleston Substations Operations, located in Charleston, SC, is seeking an Engineer I, Engineer II, or Engineer III. Responsibilities include:
- Support Substation Operations and Substation Electricians by becoming a field-oriented subject matter expert who has very good communications skills and can work well with others and independently.
- Be very involved with personal and crew safety. Conduct safety meetings as required. Research ideas for safety improvements.
- Become a technical expert on substation equipment such as power transformers, load tap changers, circuit breakers, motor operated switches, battery systems, UG transmission cable systems, and substation design.
- Perform diagnostic testing on substation equipment using tools such as DGA, TTR, power factor, DC insulation testing to make recommendations for acceptance testing, continued use, replacement of bushings and arresters, and end of life.
- Learns and uses failure trend information to prolong equipment life.
- Uses education and experience to understand why something isn’t working properly or failed.
- Learn construction standards and practices; create labor projections for substation construction projects.
- 24/7 response to emergencies, questions and needs from field personnel and their supervisors.
- Must have good driving record and be able to work in the field most of the time.
- Act as a liaison between management, field personnel, other workgroups, customers, manufacturers, contractors, and governmental personnel.
- Able to handle complex assignments with minimal direct oversight.
- Coordinate moving large power transformers.
- Coordinate environmental related issues such as SPCC plans, oil spill and cleanup projects, environmental audits, and disposal of old equipment disposals.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):
Engineer I
- 0-2+ years of relevant engineering experience
Engineer II:
- 3+ years of relevant engineering experience.
Engineer III:
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Engineer I:
- Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory;
- Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
- Effective decision making skills;
- Computer skills and application of software programs, including Microsoft Office Suites, especially Word and Excel;
- Analytical and abstract thinking skills;
- Problem solving skills;
- Ability to learn and apply AutoCAD Civil 3D skills;
- Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems;
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices;
- Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills;
- Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks;
- Ability to work within a team environment.
Engineer II:
- Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
- Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
- Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
- Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
- Planning, organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
- Effective decision making skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
- Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
- Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
- Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
Engineer III
- Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles.
- Skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines.
- Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead.
- Provide guidance to less experienced engineers.
- Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
- Strong personal computer skills.
- Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
- In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
- Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
- Proven decision making skills.
- Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
- Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.
Education Requirements
Required degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree): Bachelor
Required discipline(s): Engineering
Preferred discipline(s): Electrical Engineering
Applicants that will meet any of the above criteria with a graduation date of May 2025 will be considered.
Required Engineering Criteria:
- Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer license
