SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
The Mechanical Engineer ensures that the proper mechanical design is employed for the engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup of NextDecade projects. This position plays a supporting role in monitoring the activities of the EPC contractor in the execution of multiple projects, ensuring that the project mechanical engineering scope is well defined, mechanical engineering design deliverables are reviewed in accordance with project specifications, and commissioning and startup plans are completed and executed in a safe and efficient manner.
The position is initially based in Houston, TX between NextDecade's Headquarters, and the EPC offices. The position will require mobilization to the Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) site in Brownsville, TX to support construction, commissioning, and start-up, and early post-handover operations.
*This role requires mobilization to our site in Brownsville, TX for a long-term assignment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as client mechanical engineering support during FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and operation phases of NextDecade projects.
- Collaborates with the Next Decade Engineering team to ensure that Next Decade facilities are designed to be safe, fit-for-purpose, and meet the specified operational standards.
- Reviews EPC contractor deliverables including data sheets, design bases, specifications, engineering calculations, vendor documents, engineering studies, reports, and scopes of work.
- Contributes to the creation of mechanical data sheets, drawings, material requisitions, technical evaluations, and equipment specifications for all heat transfer equipment, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, air cooled heat exchangers, plate and frame heat exchangers, and spiral wound heat exchangers.
- Participates in technical evaluations, including process hazard analyses, 3D model reviews, and constructability reviews.
- Facilitates rotating equipment related technical discussions with partners such as equipment suppliers, regulators, and technology partners.
- Oversees the creation of comprehensive equipment monitoring and preservation programs and ensures their successful implementation to ensure target facility reliability and availability.
- Participates in commissioning activities such as walk-downs, inspections, and pre-start-up safety reviews.
- Supervises the EPC contractor on-site to ensure mechanical equipment is delivered and maintained in accordance with project standards and specifications, design, and contractual terms.
- Ensures that projects are executed in accordance with the organization's safety regulations, with quality conformance, and within schedule.
- Participates in acceptance testing, including the review of procedures and supervision of acceptance tests at site.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 5+ years experience in a similar role at an EPC contractor or operator.
- 2+ years' experience in the execution phase of major oil and gas projects with cryogenic systems, such as LNG liquefaction projects, ethylene plants, etc.
- Experience in the design, installation, and operation of piping systems, and static and rotating equipment, which may include heat exchangers, tanks, pressure vessels, centrifugal compressors, gas turbines, dry gas seals, process pumps, mechanical seals, and lubrication systems.
- Dedicated to upholding safety, ensuring quality, and protecting the environment.
- General understanding of the application of ASME codes, TEMA, ALPEMA, and API standards.
- Strong working knowledge of the hydrocarbon processing industry, including LNG, refining, and petrochemicals.
- Ability to work to project deadlines, assuring the accuracy and timely completion of deliverables.
- Working knowledge of project documents such as PFD's, P&ID's, equipment specifications, packaged equipment vendor documents, and commissioning and start up procedures.
- Working knowledge of the specifications, operation, and maintenance of multiple types of mechanical equipment.
- Working knowledge of typical work processes employed in the execution of large-scale EPC projects, including management of change, design change evaluations, and requests for information.
- Ability to develop performance criteria and inspect and test heat exchange equipment.
- Good peripheral knowledge of the contribution of all disciplines such asprocess engineering, control systems, rotating equipment, and piping engineering to the success of project execution.
- Working knowledge and experience as a mechanical engineer for an LNG and/or petrochemical company owner or EPC/Contractor.
- Team player that communicates effectively at all levels of the organization to ensure clarity in expectations, requirements, and deliverables.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adaptability to manage changes in work environment regarding adhering to updated deadlines or unexpected delays.
- Computer literate, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas
Job Site Work Environment
· Must be able to wear all necessary PPE equipment to perform job functions.
· Operates in a complex construction environment.
· Exposure to indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
· Not necessarily protected from weather and temperature changes. Possible exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions.
· Exposure to moving mechanical parts and electrical circuits.
· Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds of a pitch level sufficient to cause marked distraction.
· Routinely uses standard office and field communications equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers w/scanner and fax, and radios.
