This position may be considered for a hybrid work arrangement based on ALLETE's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the employees position will be a blend of work performed both in-person and at an offsite location such as an employee's home office. This position will report to Duluth, MN.
Minnesota Power is an electric utility company based in Duluth, Minn., and is owned by ALLETE, Inc. We provide electricity in a 26,000-square-mile service area in northeastern Minnesota and serve about 145,000 residential and commercial customers, 15 municipalities and some of the nation's largest industrial customers. We rely on a mix of wind, water, coal and biomass to generate power for our customers. Minnesota Power continues to seek out more sources of renewable energy and has moved from an energy supply that was about 5 percent renewable in 2005 to one that is 50% renewable today. We're the first Minnesota utility to reach the 50% milestone. Over the next 15 years, Minnesota Power plans to expand wind and solar resources, increase its renewable energy supply to more than 70% by 2030, achieve coal-free operations at its facilities by 2035 and invest in a resilient and flexible transmission and distribution grid.
As a Substation Maintenance Engineer you'll be part of a growing substation asset management and maintenance team. The team will be focused on developing asset management processes, preventative maintenance procedures, capital asset replacement projects, supporting field personnel and designing solutions to emergent issues, as well as researching and applying new technologies for monitoring substation equipment. The position will contribute to updating existing design standards as well as the development of standards. Projects assignments vary in scope with the opportunities to design solutions to both familiar and unique problems.
This position will work both independently and collaboratively with a cross-functional team to meet the needs of a variety of groups ranging from intracompany departments to municipalities and large industrial customers. This position will perform site visits for field verifications at medium, high, and extra high voltage substations through all phases of construction. The position will also include failure analysis, compliance, researching upgrade recommendations and maintenance procedure documentation for electrical substations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with technicians and engineers from multiple departments to investigate problems at electrical substations, verify proper response, and develop solutions for both the immediate and long term.
- Review, document and update equipment maintenance and testing procedures.
- Support and lead projects related to asset renewal, life extension, and upgrades.
- Has knowledge of and applies local, state, federal and industry codes and standards, for example OSHA, NESC, IEEE, NERC.
- Provide technical leadership and direction for engineering staff in area of expertise to assure application of sound engineering practices in a cost-effective manner to enhance customer operations, maintain reliability of systems and safety for Minnesota Power employees and the public.
- Coordinate with stakeholders to develop project scope, general arrangement, and estimates for electrical substations.
- Perform physical electrical engineering for all aspects of electrical substations including specification and ordering of equipment such as breakers, switches, instrument transformers, bus work, etc.
- Design responsibilities include development and modification of substation three-line diagrams, layouts, conduit and ground plans, electrical elevations, and performs calculations to complete and verify electrical substation designs.
- Direct work of drafting technicians to create and update substation drawings.
- Prepare bid documents for engineering and installation work with consultants or contractors. Reviews bids and makes award recommendations. Directs consultant or contractor work and reviews submittals.
- Perform administrative work relating to projects and assignments. This includes preparation of schedules, budget estimates, and project closeout documentation.
- Promote positive change in Minnesota Power business strategy through achievement of customer specific objectives and technological innovation of practical and profitable nature.
- Requires a high level of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Either a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an Engineering degree with focus in electricity, from an ABET EAC accredited program
- Two years or more job related experience PLUS an EIT (Engineer in Training Certificate)
OR - Four years or more job related experience
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous electrical utility work experience
- Familiarity with medium and high voltage substations
- EIT (Engineer in Training Certificate)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- After hours and out of town travel is occasionally required.
