Engineering Associate OR Associate Surveyor in the Lane County Surveyor’s Office – Engineering & Construction Services
Position pays a 5% differential for an Oregon PLS (Professional Land Surveyor).
About the Position
The Lane County’s Surveyor’s Office seeks an Engineering Associate or Associate Surveyor (with an Oregon PLS = 5% differential) to support its Public Land Survey System, specifically its Corners Restoration Program. The Associate Surveyor position performs survey calculations using electronic calculators and computer programs; uses computer-aided drafting programs for drafting and processing survey field data; operates modern survey equipment such as robotic total stations, GNSS base stations, rovers, and other related equipment; performs survey research activities; and assists the survey crew with restoring and perpetuating the position of Public Land Survey System corners throughout Lane County.
Engineering - Responsibilities will generally include; conducting special studies, analyses and evaluation of transportation issues and quality assurance programs; reviewing plans and permit issues for development; designing and inspecting infrastructure enhancements; designing, inspecting and implementing water quality and other natural resource related projects; reviewing engineering plans and specifications; coordinating services with other agencies and departments; and overseeing assigned engineering projects.
Typical job duties:
Operates survey instruments, electronic measuring devices, theodolites, data collectors, global positioning system (GPS) equipment, along with associated software, and other tools.
Prepares preliminary and final maps and reports of Public Land Survey Corner remonumentations for public record; recovers and analyzes evidence of previous Public Land Survey Corners; and monuments and references Public Land Survey corners under the direction of the County Surveyor.
Records survey notes; makes distance and angle measurements; performs complex mathematical computations and prepares survey data for computer input.
Plans, coordinates, and participates in the varied work activities of survey crews performing boundary or cadastral surveying.
Performs reviews of subdivision (including field audits), condominium and partition plats; reviews research documentation, and reviews and prepares right of way information.
Trains and maintains the work standards of survey crews to meet established project requirements and applicable Oregon Survey Laws.
Creates maps and plats utilizing survey data reduction software and/or computer aided drafting methods and operates and trains others in the use of personal computers.
About the Division
The County Surveyor’s Office is located within the Engineering & Construction Services Division of Lane County Public Works. The Surveyor’s Office provides property and road information support for individuals, landowners, consultants and government entities seeking survey information and documentation in Lane County. The Office also processes and reviews Land Survey/Plat related submissions for recording and filing from private and public Land Surveyors practicing in Lane County.
Schedule: Fall/Winter/Spring Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM - Summer - 4-day, 10-hour schedule, if needed.

Training:
Bachelor's degree in a field related to area of assignment; and sufficient experience as necessitated by the competency level of the position.
Experience:
- Entry/Contributing Level: 0-2 years of professional experience; entry level for incumbents with Bachelor's degree.
Licensing Requirements:
- Valid Oregon Driver's License
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of an LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) certificate is desirable.
