About the Job
The Engineering Technician will provide planning, drafting, and technical support to the engineering staff. The Technician will also provide supplemental and technical support for the drilling, laboratory, and CMT departments.
Assignments are primarily in the States of Mississippi and Louisiana with some other out-of-state assignments. Assignments may require overtime, weekend, and out-of-town assignments. Frequently, duties are performed concurrently at several job sites and occasionally at sites of considerable distance from each other. The Engineering Technician must have an appropriate motor vehicle operation license for employment.
Specific responsibilities include the following.
- Assists in drafting using MicroStation, BlueBeam, and/or AutoCAD
- Inputs spatial data within ArcGIS
- Proficient in obtaining field data, such as inclinometer readings, open well piezometer levels, pore pressure levels, and surveying
- Installs geotechnical instrumentation in field environments
- Reduces, correlates, and plots instrumentation data
- Assists the engineering staff in planning and coordinating site access for drilling equipment
- Coordinates utility locations (Louisiana, Mississippi, or Texas 811)
- Obtains permits for site access
- Operates the cone penetrometer rig
- Operates field resistivity equipment
- Prepares daily field activity reports
- Knowledge of the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D 2487)
- Knowledge of the AASHTO Soil Classification System (from AASHTO M 145 or ASTM D 3282)
- Performs percolation tests and infiltration tests
- Performs falling or rising head piezometer tests
- Inspects construction sites to determine conformance of site to design specifications
- Performs construction materials testing and inspection
- Is responsible for application of the General Safety Requirements and other contractual safety requirements to the work being performed under his/her supervision
- Is responsible for inspecting work areas, making safety recommendations, noting safety recommendations, and taking corrective actions daily
- On an as needed basis, works as a field soil technician, CMT technician, and/or laboratory technician
- Performs other duties as assigned
