Position Objective
To serve as instrument person on survey crew, perform construction inspection duties independently on projects and prepare detailed construction plans for highway improvements. This position is responsible for assisting in establishing accurate construction plans to maintain safe roads and bridges.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Performs survey duties including: operates total station, transit, level and other engineering instruments; performs rod, chain and recording; performs staking; reduces field notes and performs engineering computations.
2. May serve as temporary survey crew chief.
3. Performs plant inspections for concrete and bituminous production.
4. Inspects construction to ensure compliance to plans and specifications for grading and surfacing projects.
5. Measures and documents pay quantities.
6. Approves and records routine revisions to contracts and refers non-compliance or major revisions to assistant engineer.
7. Assists with annual bridge inspections.
8. Serves as liaison to general public and property owners on projects.
9. Keeps a diary on construction projects; prepares progress reports and pay estimates.
10. Uses computer and manual drafting techniques to produce detailed construction plans.
11. Researches property ownership records and interprets legal descriptions.
12. Prepares and updates maps.
13. Performs routine engineering computations.
14. Enters data on projects to software including project bid item quantity and correct funding sources.
15. Designs sealcoat projects and calculates quantities.
16. Assures adherence to State and Federal requirements for plan format and content.
17. Communicates and coordinates with MnDOT, city councils, city engineers, city maintenance departments, MPCA, county commissioners, and other various governmental agencies regarding engineering projects.
18. Attends work in a regular and timely manner.
19. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
