Summary of Work
Soils Classification and Foundations Lab
Perform AASHTO and ASTM tests required to determine engineering properties of soils. Conduct physical property testing on materials obtained from linear soils and deep foundation investigations for pre-construction design.
Concrete and Cement Lab
Perform AASHTO, ASTM, and NDDOT tests required to determine concrete and cement properties. Assist in the verification of contractor supplied concrete mix designs. Test the physical properties of Portland and blended cements for project acceptance. Assist in the plan depth analysis of project supplied concrete cores and strength determination.
Aggregate Lab
Perform AASHTO, ASTM, and NDDOT tests required to determine properties of multiple types of aggregates. Conduct sieve analysis and physical property testing on aggregates from construction projects and materials obtained through gravel prospecting investigations. Conduct independent assurance and dispute resolution tests. Assist in the preparation of internal round robin reference sample testing.
Asphalt Mix Design and Liquid Asphalt Lab.
Perform AASHTO, ASTM, and NDDOT tests required to determine asphalt mix and liquid asphalt properties. Conduct asphalt mix testing for construction projects. Assist in the testing and development of Superpave mix designs. Assist the bituminous lab in the acceptance testing of PG binders and emulsions.
Other Lab and Miscellaneous
Assist in the chemistry lab performing acceptance testing on Portland and blended cements and traffic paint components. Work within each lab in the calibration and maintenance of test equipment. Take part in all aspects of the AASHTO Resource accreditation program. Investigate, develop, and research material testing methods, procedures, and properties.
Assist in pre-cast or pre-stressed concrete beam inspection. Demonstrate test procedures and administer performance examinations required by the NDDOT Transportation Technician Certification Program. Building and grounds maintenance.
Work is normally performed in the office; requires extended periods of walking, standing, and sitting; frequent stretching, stooping, and bending; eye/hand coordination; heavy lifting to 80 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires six years’ work experience related to the engineering technician duties listed. College-level course work and/or degree in an engineering or related field reflecting the required abilities for this position may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis.
Requires a valid North Dakota Class B CDL driver’s license within 6 months of hire.
Overnight travel is required for this position.
Ability to lift and/or carry up to 80 lbs.
