Who We Are:
The Intelligent Systems Division develops automated solutions for commercial and government clients in multiple domains including transportation (traffic management, connected automated vehicle), manufacturing robotics, medical prognostics and communication standards.
Objectives of this Role:
- Join the Robotics Department to contribute to building advanced capabilities, technologies and solutions in the field of industrial robotics and automation that solve real-world challenges faced by our customers.
- Support mechanical design, controls, software development, and hardware integration on industrial robots, cobots, automation control hardware, and automated vehicles. Learn and work on a team with some of the brightest minds in robotics.
- Activities will include work primarily at SwRI facilities/laboratories; meetings as well as deployment efforts may occur at commercial and government client facilities.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- Participate in equipment development, balance product specifications, process control requirements, component selections, control architecture, cost, and requirements.
- Design system power distribution, control architecture, and system field cabling/interconnect.
- Design electrical panels using EPlan Electrical CAD. Design safety interlock system.
- Implement safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, and custom equipment.
- Enforce application of standards such as NFPA, NEC, and IEC.
- Coordinate with peers in other engineering groups to ensure design criteria is synchronized within all disciplines to meet requirements.
- Work closely with project managers to ensure requirements and specifications are translated into final design.
- Organize and manage vendor on control related deliverable to ensure standards and specifications are met.
- Debug and modify electrical system related issues during system testing and commissioning.
- Communicate effectively with internal team, external clients, and industry partners and coordinate individual performance goals and objectives set by the organization.
Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related Engineering Technology degree
- 0-6 years: Must have relevant academic and/or internship experience in Electrical Engineering Technology and in the areas noted below.
- Proficient with Eplan Electrical P8 or equivalent for designing electrical control panel, control system wiring, & instrumentation. In depth knowledge Electrical & Safety Standards. Familiar with safety machinery & process design.
- Proficient with selecting appropriate circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD, industrial PDP components, servo systems & key electrical control components.
- Familiar with Beckhoff, Allen Bradly, Siemens, or other PLCs for overall control system project implementation. Experience transitioning products from prototype to production.
- A valid/clear driver's license is required.
