What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems’ Schaumburg, Illinois office has an immediate opening for a Bridge Inspection Engineer. This entry level position includes inspection of bridges and tunnels along with the preparation of load ratings, structural design, rehabilitation, construction documents, specifications, and estimates. In addition, duties may include construction inspection services. Day to day assignments and technical guidance will be provided by current staff Project Managers. TranSystems has a National Bridge Inspection Practice, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work at the National level for agencies in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Texas, California, and others as we grow.

The right candidate should be enthusiastic and passionate about focusing on the inspection and evaluation of in-service structures. There are opportunities to be trained and/or join TranSystems’ growing National Rope Access Team. There are also opportunities to be involved in TranSystems' UAS (drone) inspection program.

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following:  

• Assists others in analyzing information and data to perform inspection/design tasks.
• May be asked to participate in non-design engineering activities such as construction inspection and materials testing, surveying, CADD production, and field data collection.
• Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
• Responsible for accuracy of engineering design, reports, load ratings, and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
• Research design options and document findings for Senior Project Engineer.
• Maintains project database by writing computer programs; entering and backing up data.
• Researches code requirements.
• Keeps Senior Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
• Assist or participate in preparation of business proposals.
• Be willing to travel within the continental United States.

What you bring to our firm:

• Bachelor’s degree in civil and/or structural engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET-accredited university or college
• Individuals should have experience in reading plans and shop drawings and evaluating contractor compliance with construction plans and specifications.
• Team oriented engineer with strong communication skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Suite and Bentley MicroStation
• Able and willing to travel within the continental United States
• Physically capable of performing field work including working at heights, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
• Valid Driver’s License

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:

• The preferred candidate will have a structural engineering background, knowledge of Microstation, AutoCAD, and some experience with structural engineering design drawings, specifications and cost estimates.
• Rope access experience or an interest in learning rope access techniques (SPRAT, IRATA)
• Intimate experience with Microsoft Excel including basic programming ability
• Completion of the Engineering-in-Training exam is strongly encouraged.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
