ABOUT THE POSITION
VHB’s Metro D.C. team is looking for an entry-level Transportation/Traffic Engineer to join our Transportation Systems group. This role can be based out of our Washington, D.C. or Tysons, VA office.
The selected candidate will work with a team of traffic engineers and transportation planners on a variety of public, private and institutional projects within broad cross-section of markets, including municipal, state agencies, higher education, federal lands and aviation.
Responsibilities
- Working within a team of professionals in developing traffic and transportation planning and engineering solutions for a multitude of transportation projects
- Conduct field data collection, including collecting and tabulating traffic data
- Perform research and data analysis, including working with large data sets
- Perform traffic engineering analysis, safety analysis, and operational studies
- Perform traffic operations and capacity analysis using Synchro, VISSIM, and other analysis tools
- Critically analyze and evaluate transportation improvement alternatives to support planning and engineering projects
- Prepare conceptual and detailed transportation designs, including sign, pavement marking, and traffic signal design plans in MicroStation
- Develop traffic signal timing plans
- Prepare quantity take-offs and cost estimates
- Research best practices for traffic and transportation policy
- Prepare written documents, summarize data and analysis, and assemble reports to convey findings and recommendations

- Understanding of transportation engineering, operations, safety, and design fundamentals

- Ability to think critically
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil/transportation engineering or related field
- 0-1 year of professional civil/transportation engineering/planning experience
- Familiarity with national engineering standards, including AASHTO, MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, Highway Safety Manual and/or ITE guidance documents. Prior experience with local standards in DC, Virginia, or Maryland is desirable.
- Proficiency in MS Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience or proficiency with industry software, including CAD/Microstation, Open Roads Designer, Synchro, Vissim, HCS, ArcGIS, Remix, InDesign, and/or big data analysis tools is a plus
- EIT certification preferred
Hiring Salary Range - $75,000 - $80,000. However, the final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VHB offers a holistic benefits package which can be found here.
