Summary:
The shop lighting technician at Gateway Studios & Production Services plays a vital part in our lighting department's production processes. The Lighting Technician is responsible for the preparation, installation, and removal of temporary electrical power systems, lighting control systems, and lighting instruments necessary for the creation of live event productions, including concerts, music festivals, corporate event events, live sporting events, etc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Prep Lighting:
- Load set lighting equipment manually into carts or containers.
- Transfer equipment to its destination point for loading or unloading.
- Prepare in shop the set-up of lighting, including hanging, focusing lighting instruments, laying and connecting power cables, operating lighting instruments, programming lighting control consoles, operating spotlights, installing fixtures, maintaining equipment readiness and equipment inventory.
Equipment prep and testing:
- Carry out lighting tests, position lights during prep, and testing manage the inventory of bulbs and filters.
- Test new technologies and operate lighting boards.
- Make minor repairs on equipment as needed.
Communication:
- Communicate with lead lighting technicians, co-workers, and clients as needed throughout projects to ensure customer satisfaction.
Safety Ensure workplace safety and efficiency:
- Follow proper safety protocol at all times.
- Wear proper PPE at all times, based on the scope of work.
Attendance:
- Attendance is an essential requirement for this position.
Any and all other duties:
- This is to be determined by the supervisor on a permanent basis or as assigned by the project supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
Experience:
- At least two years experience as a lighting technician in live event productions.
- Significant professional experience as a lighting installer or technician.
- Strong working knowledge of stage lighting, fixtures, temporary stage lighting wiring systems, and common stage lighting control systems.
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and collaboration skills.
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to travel to client sites as needed.
- Ability to work under a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands:
- Ability to work at a consistent pace throughout the shift.
- Due to the complexity and weight of the equipment, adequate stamina and physical strength are necessary to perform the duties of the job.
- Work with power cables and power distribution in common live event environments.
- Work under any prevailing terrain and weather conditions and be appropriately dressed to do so, regardless of cold, heat, humidity, or wet weather conditions.
Strength:
- Frequent manual lifting, up to 50 lbs., depending on equipment available (50-80% of shift).
- Frequent pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs., depending on equipment available (50-80% of shift).
Manual Dexterity:
- Sufficient manual dexterity to perform activities required under essential functions.
- Frequent light grasping and fine motor tasks (65-85% of shift).
Coordination:
- Ability to perform gross body coordination and hand-eye coordination tasks without instability.
- Work on a variety of uneven surfaces installing power cables and lights.
Mobility:
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, squat, lift, crawl, twist, and move frequently during working hours.
- Frequent standing (65-85%).
- Occasional stair climbing and descending (30% of shift).
Visual:
- Must be able to see or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately to ensure that the essential functions of this position can be fully met.
Hearing:
- Must be able to hear or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately to ensure that the essential functions of this position can be fully met.
Speech:
- Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
