The EHS Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the organization's environmental, health, and safety programs. The role involves ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company policies and procedures. The EHS Specialist will work to minimize risks and promote a culture of safety within the organization.
Job Responsibilities:
● Investigate all incidents, illnesses, and deficiencies to identify root causes and necessary corrective actions to prevent recurrence
● Develop new and continually revise existing EHS programs and supporting documentation. Write technical documents.
● Communicate departmental programmatic and procedural changes through email, physical and virtual signage, Q&A meetings, and trainings
● Design and present material for recurring safety meetings. Promote participation and ensure all associated record keeping is maintained.
● Maintain an injury reporting database, update files and supporting records, accurately enter injury and illness data to ensure compliance
● Attend cross departmental meetings to represent the EHS department and relay or act on information appropriately
● Create materials, communications, and resources for the successful implementation and maintenance of safety programs
● Stay abreast of changing regulations and EHS trends
● Assist in the development of and conduct new team member safety orientation
● Liaise with workers’ compensation personnel to manage claims and expedite closure. Utilize claims management software to gather claims data.
● Using appropriate leadership and resources, implement changes at numerous levels within the company to ensure regulatory compliance
● Develop and update training materials and technical reports
● Build and maintain relationships with local occupational health clinics and doctors
● Organize and perform emergency action drills. Update emergency action training and documentation.
● Develop a wide range of metrics and data summaries
● Utilize Google Workspace, MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Reader and PDF, other web-based applications, and any departmental specific software platforms to maximize effectiveness and efficiency of the EHS Department
● Build and maintain recurring reporting for corrective action tracking. Follow up with departmental leadership to ensure closures.
● Perform inspection, audits, and risk assessments. Maintain associated records.
● Lead the emergency response team
● Maintain company wide EHS training matrix
● Maintain and promote professional business relationships with all Athletic Brewing team members
● Obtain and maintain required environmental permits, licenses, and other regulatory documentation. Ensure permit requirements are met.
● Coordinate the management of hazardous waste. Manage hazardous waste streams.
● Assign or perform task or work environment based safety training, monitor and maintain records according to regulatory requirements
● Generate, compile, and report departmental KPIs on a periodic and regular basis

Education, Experience, and Skills:
● Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Science, or other technical degree
● Minimum of 3 years environmental, health & safety experience
● Strong knowledge and experience with EHS regulations and workers compensation law.
● Experience within the brewing industry is preferred but not mandatory
● Refined communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
● Strong technical skills with the ability to explain complex issues and requirements verbally and in writing in an easily understood manner
● Inclination to lead with good energy and sense of urgency. Works well on cross functional teams whether in a lead or support role.
● Ability to read and understand chemical properties and apply them to hazard assessment information
● Ability to read and interpret regulations and technical documents
● Proficiency using Google Workspace
● Aptitude to quickly learn new software platforms
● Ability to respond effectively to specialized inquiries
● Self-directed and demonstrated ability to implement strategic EHS plans
● Experience utilizing document control software for routing and maintenance of EHS programs preferred- but not mandatory
● Experience calibrating monitoring equipment
● Willingness to work flexible hours
● Must be able to read, speak and write the English language with proficiency and correct grammar
● Must be able to travel at least annually within the country
● Possession of professional certifications ASP, CSP, CIH, CRM, CBCP, or other related certification preferred
● Bi-lingual preferred Spanish/English
Job Details:
● Location: Based out of San Diego, CA – Onsite presence required.
● Salary: Commensurate with experience - Base salary and opportunities for performance bonuses. * Salary range: $70k-$85k
